Shillong Farmers' Market Sees Strong Turnout, Highlights Seasonal Crops and Entrepreneurial Support
The monthly farmers' market in Shillong, organized for April by 1917 iTEAMS under the state Department of Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare and supported by the Meghalaya Farmers' (Empowerment) Commission, was successfully held on Saturday. The event drew an impressive crowd of approximately 600 people, demonstrating robust community engagement and interest in local agricultural products.
Focus on Seasonal Produce and Direct Sourcing
This month's market prominently featured focus crops including potatoes, coriander, and spring onion, the latter locally known as 'jyllang'. All produce was sourced directly from farmers across various districts of Meghalaya, effectively reflecting the region's current seasonal agricultural output. This direct-from-farm approach ensures freshness and supports local growers by eliminating intermediaries.
Alignment with State Vision and Economic Goals
An official involved in the initiative emphasized that since its inception in January 2026, the farmers' market continues to align with the vision of Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma. The primary objectives are to improve livelihoods for farmers, enhance market opportunities, and promote a resilient, self-sufficient agricultural economy within the state. The market operates as a vital component in transforming agricultural marketing practices and establishing direct channels between producers and consumers.
Entrepreneurial Participation Under PMFME Scheme
A notable participant was Bansaralin Mukhim, a solo entrepreneur benefiting from the Pradhan Mantri Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) Scheme. Mukhim, who joined the farmers' market for the first time, expressed her delight at the opportunity to showcase her produce. She highlighted that this platform, along with the traditional market in Iewduh, Shillong, provides valuable exposure for her products.
Tourist Appreciation for Unique Local Foods
The market also attracted visitors from outside the region, including a tourist from Kolkata. He pointed out the presence of 'unique edibles' specific to the hills, such as bamboo smoked fish, which he noted is rare in his home city. This feedback underscores the market's role in promoting regional culinary specialties and attracting tourism.
The event underscores ongoing efforts to strengthen Meghalaya's agricultural sector through community-focused initiatives, direct farmer-consumer connections, and support for small-scale entrepreneurs under national schemes like PMFME.
