South East Central Railway Sets New Freight Benchmark in FY 2025-26

In a significant development for India's rail network, the South East Central Railway (SECR) has announced a remarkable achievement in freight performance for the financial year 2025-26. According to Deepak Kumar Gupta, the divisional railway manager of SECR Nagpur, the zone transported an impressive 261.25 million tonnes of cargo, generating revenue exceeding Rs30,410 crore. This announcement was made during a press conference held on Thursday, attended by senior officials including senior divisional commercial manager Dilip Singh.

Substantial Growth in Freight Volume and Revenue

The freight volume of 261.25 million tonnes represents a robust 3.18% increase compared to the previous year's 253 million tonnes. This growth has played a crucial role in bolstering Indian Railways' nationwide total, which reached 1,670 million tonnes. The financial performance was further enhanced by a dramatic 57.64% surge in non-fare revenue, which climbed to Rs4.10 crore, and a near-doubling of parking earnings, which jumped 98% to Rs1.65 crore.

Commercial and Digital Initiatives Drive Efficiency

SECR's success can be attributed to a series of innovative commercial strategies aimed at improving operational efficiency and passenger convenience. Key initiatives included the operation of 10 special or parcel trains, which completed 34 trips, and the introduction of new services such as the 'Bharat Gaurav' tourist train. Additionally, the railway zone implemented full digital ticket checking through Automatic Ticket Vending Machines and Station Ticket Booking Agents, streamlining the ticketing process and reducing wait times for passengers.

Infrastructure and Safety Enhancements

On the engineering front, SECR made significant strides in infrastructure development and maintenance. The zone utilized advanced rail grinding and ultrasonic testing systems to ensure track integrity, undertook track renewal across 196 kilometers, and installed 27 level crossing gates along with 2,176 door detection systems. Safety remained a paramount concern, with 30 safety seminars and 49 safety campaigns conducted to promote awareness and best practices among staff and the public.

Electrification and Crossing Elimination Progress

Electrification efforts saw substantial progress, with 211.45 track kilometers of Overhead Equipment (OHE) sanctioned and 558 kilometers of catenary wire energized. This achievement represents a 279% completion rate against set targets, highlighting SECR's commitment to modernizing its network. Furthermore, over 24 level crossings were eliminated through the construction of Road Over Bridges, Road Under Bridges, and Limited Height Subways, enhancing safety and reducing traffic congestion.

Comprehensive Development Across Multiple Sectors

Beyond freight and infrastructure, SECR focused on holistic development, including personnel welfare, medical facilities, and security measures. Station redevelopment projects were a key priority, featuring platform extensions, foot over bridges, and the installation of modern amenities at various stations. These efforts aim to provide a better travel experience for passengers and improve overall operational efficiency.

The achievements of SECR in FY 2025-26 underscore its vital role in India's transportation sector, contributing to economic growth and setting new standards for railway performance nationwide.
