Restaurant Industry Grapples with Severe LPG Supply Crisis
The restaurant and hospitality sector across India is facing significant operational challenges due to acute shortages of LPG cylinders. Despite the government's recent decision to increase commercial LPG allocation to up to 70%, industry executives report that supplies remain extremely limited and erratic, creating widespread uncertainty.
Industry Leaders Express Concern Over Implementation Delay
Anurag Katriar, founder of Indigo Hospitality, highlighted the ongoing difficulties, stating, "Supply is still hugely limited and erratic. A feeling of uncertainty looms large." This sentiment is echoed by Pradeep Shetty, vice-president of the Federation of Hotel & Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI), who emphasized that the key question remains how quickly the revised allocation will translate into actual on-ground availability.
On-the-Ground Reality: Hand-to-Mouth Operations
A visit to popular dining hubs like Indiranagar's 12th Main in Bengaluru reveals the strain on independent restaurants. Nikhil Gupta, who operates brands including The Pizza Bakery and Paris Panini, described the situation as "all hand-to-mouth at this point," illustrating the day-to-day struggles establishments face in maintaining regular operations.
Restaurant Sector Still Receiving Limited Supplies
Sagar Daryani, co-founder and CEO of Wow! Momo Foods and president of the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI), pointed out that the government's move doesn't directly benefit the restaurant sector, which continues to receive only 20%-30% of LPG supplies. He further noted that the supply situation varies significantly by state, with regions like Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Rajasthan imposing restrictions on allocation for restaurants, thereby exacerbating the sector's challenges.
Regional Disparities Compound the Crisis
The LPG supply crisis is not uniform across India. Daryani explained that state-wise variations in allocation policies are hurting the restaurant industry disproportionately. This regional disparity adds another layer of complexity to an already dire situation, forcing many establishments to operate under constant pressure and uncertainty.
Industry stakeholders are now calling for more immediate and effective measures to ensure sustained LPG supply, warning that prolonged shortages could have severe repercussions for India's vibrant hospitality sector and the broader economy.
