Renault Elevates India to Pivotal Global Manufacturing and Export Hub
French automotive giant Renault has officially designated India as a cornerstone of its ambitious international expansion strategy, targeting 2030 as a key milestone. The company revealed plans to establish India as a major global manufacturing and export center, with four new locally developed models slated for launch, including fully electric and hybrid vehicles.
Strategic Vision Unveiled in Paris
While presenting the group's mid-term 'futuREady' strategy in Paris on Tuesday, Renault's top management emphasized India's central role in accelerating growth beyond European markets. The announcement comes as Renault reported selling 620,000 vehicles in non-European markets in 2025, marking an impressive 11% increase from the previous year.
India will join Morocco, Türkiye, Latin America, and South Korea as one of Renault's five global investment hubs, with plans to transform the country into a comprehensive production and supply center. The facility will manufacture a complete range of models for both domestic consumption and international export markets, including vehicles for alliance partner Nissan.
India's Automotive Landscape Drives Strategic Focus
Renault identified India's rapidly expanding automotive market as a primary factor in its strategic decision. The country's strong demand for SUVs, coupled with the gradual transition toward vehicle electrification, positions India as an ideal long-term strategic center for Renault's global operations.
The company's proposed four new models for India by 2030 will serve dual purposes: meeting the evolving preferences of Indian consumers while simultaneously catering to multiple export markets worldwide. This dual-market approach represents a significant shift in Renault's global manufacturing strategy.
Flagship SUV Model to Lead Product Offensive
A key component of Renault's India strategy involves production of its new B-segment sub-4 meter SUV, derived from the Renault Bridger Concept. This versatile model will be available in combustion, hybrid, or fully electric versions depending on specific market requirements.
The SUV is scheduled for initial launch in India by the end of 2027, with subsequent gradual rollout to other international markets. This phased approach allows Renault to leverage India's manufacturing capabilities while testing market response before broader global distribution.
Established Infrastructure Supports Expansion Plans
With more than 15 years of operational presence in India, Renault plans to capitalize on its established supplier ecosystem and local manufacturing expertise to scale production and support export initiatives. The company recently assumed full ownership of the Renault-Nissan Alliance plant in Oragadam, near Chennai, which boasts an annual production capacity of up to 480,000 units.
This manufacturing facility will serve as the foundation for Renault's expanded operations, providing the necessary infrastructure to meet both domestic demand and international export requirements.
Ambitious Global Targets for 2030
Renault Group has established aggressive global sales targets, aiming to surpass 2 million vehicle sales by 2030. The company projects that half of these sales will originate from markets outside Europe, underscoring the importance of its international expansion strategy.
Additionally, Renault has committed to achieving 100% electrified sales in Europe and 50% electrified sales in international markets by the end of the decade. These targets align with global automotive industry trends toward sustainable transportation solutions and position Renault competitively in the evolving electric vehicle market.
The strategic focus on India represents a calculated move to capitalize on the country's growing automotive market while establishing a robust manufacturing base for global exports. As Renault implements its 'futuREady' strategy, India's role as a production and export hub is expected to significantly contribute to the company's international growth objectives through 2030 and beyond.
