Salem-based startup RealNutriCo is scaling up production of its patented Hyper Rice and Hyper Dal products, capitalizing on growing consumer demand for protein-rich everyday foods. The company aims to address India's widespread protein deficiency by fortifying traditional staples like rice and lentils without altering their taste or cooking properties.
Addressing Protein Deficiency Through Staple Foods
India has long grappled with protein deficiency, a concern highlighted by nutrition experts and policymakers. While supplements have flooded the market, RealNutriCo takes a different approach: enhancing the nutritional profile of foods Indians already consume daily. Founder Achyuth Kumar spent years studying cultural eating habits, leading to the creation of Hyper Rice and Hyper Dal.
Kumar noted that Indians are reluctant to replace rice with alternatives like millets or quinoa. Instead of fighting this behavior, he decided to improve rice itself. RealNutriCo's tagline, "Real Nutrition, Not an Illusion," reflects its mission to make supplements unnecessary.
Hyper Rice: A Nutritional Upgrade Without Compromise
Launched 1.5 years ago, Hyper Rice is now fully patented. Compared to regular white rice, it delivers twice the protein, five times the fiber, 13% fewer carbohydrates, and over 16 vitamins and minerals. Crucially, it looks, cooks, and tastes identical to standard rice. The Sugar Control variant has a glycemic index of just 43, making it suitable for diabetics.
Thousands of Indian families have adopted Hyper Rice in dishes like dal chawal, pulao, khichdi, idli, and dosa without changing recipes. According to the company, consumer acceptance has been strong, with many embracing the product as a practical solution.
Hyper Dal: Completing the Meal
Following Hyper Rice's success, RealNutriCo launched Hyper Dal in three varieties: Toor, Masoor, and Chana. Each offers 45% more protein than regular dal, with fewer carbohydrates, a lower glycemic index, and reduced bloating. The dal cooks and tastes the same, fitting into recipes like sambar, bisibelebath, and dal tadka.
The combination of Hyper Rice and Hyper Dal in a meal like dal-chawal or khichdi provides approximately 54% more protein than the same meal made with regular ingredients. This significant increase occurs without supplements, powders, or extra effort.
Company Philosophy and Market Impact
RealNutriCo claims all products are plant-based, non-GMO, and free from additives, sweeteners, and preservatives. The startup's goal is to integrate nutrition into existing food habits rather than replace them. Kumar stated, "The goal was never to build another nutrition brand. It was to make nutrition brands unnecessary."
For a country where protein deficiency persists and cultural attachment to food is strong, RealNutriCo's approach may offer a timely solution. The company is scaling up production to meet rising demand from health-conscious consumers across India.
