The Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) has undergone a leadership transition with Ravi Kota assuming the role of Chairman and Managing Director (CMD), succeeding Dr DK Sunil, who has superannuated. Kota was selected by the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) from a pool of eight candidates.
Extensive Experience and Key Achievements
Ravi Kota, the 22nd CMD of HAL, brings over three decades of experience across aerospace, defence, manufacturing, and electronics sectors. Prior to this appointment, he served as Director (Operations) and Executive Director (Corporate Planning). He played a pivotal role in securing major contracts, including two Tejas deals for 180 airframes for the Indian Air Force and a 156 Light Combat Helicopter deal for the Army and Air Force.
Operational Improvements and Indigenous Content
Under Kota's initiatives, HAL enhanced serviceability rates through customer-centric measures, established seamless data communication with IAF bases, and created a single point of contact for timely support. He is credited with increasing domestic content in the LCA Tejas and expanding production capacity in Nashik, which now hosts the third Tejas production line alongside two in Bengaluru. The Nashik facility also assembles the Sukhoi-30MKI fleet.
Kota also spearheaded HAL's entry into civil aviation manufacturing and Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) operations. He fostered an aviation manufacturing ecosystem by outsourcing major fuselage assemblies to private sector partners, notably in the Tejas program.
Challenges and Additional Roles
Despite progress, HAL has faced delays in delivering Tejas Mk-1A aircraft to the IAF due to pending integration of critical systems. US-based General Electric is behind schedule in supplying engines, with only five fighters equipped with jet engines so far, while two aircraft have been assembled. Additionally, Kota serves as a nominee director on the board of Multi-Role Transport Aircraft Ltd, a joint venture with Russia's United Aircraft Corporation.
