Hotels Prioritize Weddings Amid Gas Crunch
Facing an acute gas crunch, several hotels in Rajkot have begun prioritizing wedding functions over other events to manage their dwindling resources. A local hotel owner explained, "Our property is booked for various events, including social gatherings, corporate functions, and weddings. But due to the LPG shortage, we had to ask some clients to postpone their events so that gas can be reserved for weddings." This shift highlights the sector's struggle to balance commitments with scarce fuel availability.
Restaurants Slash Menus by 50% to Conserve Fuel
To conserve their limited LPG supply, many restaurants in Rajkot have cut their menus by nearly 50%, focusing only on the most ordered dishes. For instance, a hotel chain operating in tourist hubs of Saurashtra, including Rajkot, has stopped serving popular items such as South Indian dishes, sizzlers, and brownies, which require continuous or high heat. Instead, kitchens are preparing items like curries and gravies that can be cooked with lower fuel use, aiming to stretch their gas reserves further.
Exploration of Inadequate Alternative Fuel Sources
Restaurant owners are actively exploring alternatives such as induction plates and stoves powered by coal, wood, or diesel. However, these solutions are proving to be temporary and inadequate. A restaurant owner noted, "Most hotels do not have the infrastructure to accommodate such alternative fuel stoves, and these options can also be accident hazards." This underscores the lack of viable substitutes for commercial LPG in the current crisis.
Allegations of Black Marketing Worsen the Situation
Compounding the problem, hotel owners have alleged black marketing of LPG cylinders, which is exacerbating the shortage. One hotel owner warned, "If the shortage continues for 30 days, we may have to tell customers we can only provide accommodation and water, as our kitchens may have to close." This potential shutdown highlights the severe economic and operational risks faced by the hospitality industry if the gas crisis persists.
