Railways Plans 5th & 6th Lines on Major Metro Corridors

Indian Railways Initiates Planning for 5th and 6th Lines on High-Density Corridors

In a significant move to bolster its network capacity, the railway ministry has commenced preparations for laying 5th and 6th lines on the High Density Network (HDN) corridors. These critical routes connect the four major metro cities of Delhi, Howrah, Mumbai, and Chennai, aiming to facilitate the operation of more passenger and freight trains.

Backbone of Indian Railways Under Strain

The HDN, spanning 11,051 kilometers, serves as the backbone of the Indian railway system. Although it constitutes only 16% of the total network, it handles a staggering 41% of all rail traffic. Currently, around 8,400 kilometers of this network, representing over 60% of the HDN, are operating at 100-150% above their designated line capacity, highlighting an urgent need for expansion.

Key Corridors Targeted for Enhancement

The seven primary HDN corridors under consideration include:

  • Delhi–Howrah (1,422 km)
  • Howrah–Mumbai (2,039 km)
  • Delhi–Mumbai (1,321 km)
  • Delhi–Guwahati (1,875 km)
  • Delhi–Chennai (2,041 km)
  • Howrah–Chennai (1,117 km)
  • Mumbai–Chennai (1,238 km)

Strategic Planning and Zone-Level Proposals

Recently, the railway board convened a meeting with senior officials from all zones to finalize planning for doubling, multitracking, and the requirement of 5th and 6th lines on these HDN routes. Each zone has been tasked with preparing detailed proposals for their respective sections, taking into account line capacity, current traffic demands, and future projections.

Official Insights on the Augmentation Plan

In response to inquiries about the proposed expansion, a senior railway official stated, “Based on traffic projections, 5th and 6th lines may be required in some of the HDN corridors. Railways is examining this. This will be based on traffic study, which is yet to be carried out.”

The official further elaborated on the criteria for finalizing the plan, noting that decisions regarding the laying of 5th and 6th lines will be made after considering traffic projections, economic modes to be connected, and areas that remain unconnected. This approach ensures that the expansion aligns with broader economic and connectivity goals.

This initiative marks a pivotal step in modernizing India's railway infrastructure, addressing congestion, and supporting the nation's growing transportation needs.
