Railways Achieve Milestone with Completion of Parabil-Khamar Stretch in Talcher-Bimalagarh New Line
The Indian Railways has successfully completed the construction of a 14.2-kilometer segment from Parabil to Khamar, marking a significant advancement in the ambitious 150-kilometer Talcher-Bimalagarh new line project. This achievement comes after overcoming persistent delays in land acquisition, which had previously hindered progress. The Parabil-Khamar section has now received the general manager's sanction, authorizing its opening for goods traffic. With this development, the total commissioned length of the Talcher-Bimalagarh project has expanded to nearly 34 kilometers, encompassing the Talcher-Sunakhani-Samal-Parabil section along with the newly finished Parabil-Khamar stretch.
Strategic Importance and Infrastructure Details
The Parabil-Khamar portion is a critical component of the strategically vital Talcher-Bimalagarh rail link. This project is primarily aimed at improving coal evacuation from the Talcher coalfields and establishing a shorter rail connectivity between Talcher and the Rourkela-Sundargarh industrial belt. The construction of this 14.2-kilometer section involved the acquisition of over 213 acres of land, including private, government, and forest areas, highlighting the complex logistical challenges faced by railway authorities.
Railway officials have reported that substantial infrastructure has been created along this stretch. This includes over 10 lakh cubic metres of earthwork, demonstrating the scale of engineering efforts. Additionally, 45 minor bridges and road underbridges have been constructed, alongside six major bridges and road overbridges, ensuring robust connectivity and safety. Sources confirmed that track linking is complete over 17 kilometers, indicating steady progress in the overall project.
Station Development and Future Prospects
Two station buildings have been erected at Parabil and Khamar stations, designed to serve both freight movement and potential future passenger services once the entire Talcher-Bimalagarh project is fully completed. Initially, the section will be utilized for goods traffic, with a focus on coal and other mineral transportation, which is expected to boost economic activities in the region. This move aligns with broader efforts to enhance logistical efficiency and support industrial growth in Odisha.
The completion of the Parabil-Khamar stretch not only addresses immediate transportation needs but also sets the stage for further expansions in the Talcher-Bimalagarh new line.
