PVUNL Patratu Unit 2 Trial Run by May 2026, 800 MW

Ramgarh: Patratu Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (PVUNL) in Patratu, Ramgarh, is preparing for the full-load trial operation of Unit 2 with an established capacity of 800 MW by the end of May 2026. This milestone comes six months after Unit 1, of the same capacity, was commissioned on November 5, 2025.

Project Overview

PVUNL is a joint venture between the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) and Jharkhand Bijali Vitran Nigam Limited (JBVNL), a state government entity. The company is developing a supercritical power project with a total established capacity of 4,000 MW, executed in two phases. Phase 1 includes three units of 800 MW each (3x800 MW), while Phase 2 comprises two additional units of 800 MW each (2x800 MW).

Progress on Unit 1 and Unit 2

Ziaur Rehman, head of PVUNL human resources, stated that Unit 1 of Phase 1, with 800 MW capacity, was commissioned six months ago and is now operational. Jharkhand receives 85% of the power generated from this unit, which operates at nearly 80% of its installed capacity, producing around 640 MW. Unit 2, also of 800 MW capacity, is almost ready for its full-load trial run.

Officials noted that the progress on Unit 2 marks another significant step in the expansion of the Patratu project, which is expected to strengthen power availability in Jharkhand and meet the state's rising electricity demand. The company is advancing work under Phase 1 while also preparing the groundwork for subsequent units under the larger expansion plan.
