Pune's Massive Rs 1,866 Crore Road Infrastructure Overhaul Unveiled
The Pune Municipal Corporation has unveiled an ambitious road infrastructure plan, with the 2026–27 draft budget allocating a substantial Rs 1,866 crore to the road department. This significant financial commitment signals a major strategic focus on enhancing urban mobility and tackling the city's growing traffic congestion challenges. Civic officials have confirmed that the funding will be directed toward a comprehensive suite of projects, including new road construction, critical upgrades to existing arterial routes, and widespread infrastructure improvements designed to streamline travel across Pune's expanding metropolitan area.
64 Kilometers of New Roads and Continuous Maintenance
A cornerstone of this initiative is the plan to construct nearly 64 kilometers of new roads within the upcoming fiscal year. This expansion is aimed at accommodating the city's rapid growth and improving connectivity between developing neighborhoods. In tandem with new construction, the civic administration has pledged to implement a rigorous, continuous maintenance program for the existing road network. This dual approach is intended to enhance surface quality, ensure smoother and safer travel for motorists, and prolong the lifespan of Pune's vital transportation corridors, which currently span over 2,273 kilometers.
Strategic Focus on Arterial Roads and Major Junctions
Recognizing that traffic flow is heavily concentrated, authorities will prioritize upgrades on Pune's 32 arterial roads, which currently bear the burden of nearly 80% of the city's vehicular traffic. Targeted corridor improvement works on these key routes are expected to significantly ease congestion and boost the overall efficiency of the busiest transport arteries. Furthermore, a dedicated junction improvement program will cover 30 major intersections across the city. These upgrades will involve the installation of better traffic signal systems, optimized lane management, and redesigned junction layouts, all aimed at reducing chronic bottlenecks and improving traffic flow at Pune's most problematic crossings.
Land Acquisition and Completing Missing Links
To facilitate these expansive projects, a portion of the increased budget has been earmarked for land acquisition. The administration plans to acquire plots necessary for completing roads and addressing missing links in the network. For smaller parcels, the civic body intends to offer cash compensation to expedite the process and prevent major project delays. A critical component of the connectivity plan involves developing 12 crucial missing road links that currently disrupt smooth traffic movement. Completing these strategic connections is projected to create seamless connectivity between neighborhoods and substantially reduce travel times on several important routes.
Major Infrastructure Projects and Smart Technology Integration
The draft budget also includes provisions for large-scale infrastructure developments such as flyovers, grade separators, road tunnels, and enhanced pedestrian walkways. These projects are designed to modernize Pune's road network and directly address the mounting traffic pressure in a city experiencing rapid urbanization.
