Pune Railway Yard Remodelling Delayed by Another Year

Pune Railway Station Redevelopment Faces Further Delays, Full Completion Now Expected in One Year

Senior railway officials announced on Friday that the long-pending railway yard remodelling project at Pune railway station, which includes the construction of six additional platforms, will require another year to be fully completed. This ambitious infrastructure initiative, first discussed in 2016, has been plagued by continuous disruptions and postponements, but authorities now assert it is finally on the right track.

Substantial Funding and Partial Progress

Rajesh Kumar Verma, the divisional railway manager for Pune, revealed that a substantial sum of Rs 400 crore has been officially sanctioned for the comprehensive development of Pune station. He confirmed that complex work on the yard remodelling has already been partially initiated. "By the end of this year, we plan to complete the entire work," Verma stated, indicating a targeted timeline for the project's conclusion.

Strategic Shift in Train Movements and Supporting Stations

The project is a critical component of the broader Pune station development plan and will involve significant operational changes. Train movements originating from Pune are set to be strategically shifted as part of the remodelling efforts. To support this transition, the railways have concurrently focused on developing Hadapsar and Khadki stations.

  • Hadapsar railway station is reported to be nearly complete, enhancing regional connectivity.
  • For improved passenger access, work has been sanctioned for platform number 4 and a new foot overbridge at Hadapsar, providing a second entry option.
  • Similarly, development work pertaining to Khadki station has also received official sanction, ensuring a cohesive upgrade across key railway nodes in the area.

Master Plan Ready but Awaiting Approval

Regarding the overarching Pune station redevelopment plan, Verma disclosed that the final master plan is now ready. This blueprint outlines a comprehensive vision for transforming the station into a modern transport hub. However, another official highlighted a potential bottleneck, noting that the work will inevitably take additional time as the master plan must first undergo approval by higher authorities within the railway administration.

"It is an ambitious project aimed at the full development of the Pune railway station, which has been facing some space issues due to the increase in the number of passengers," the official explained. This statement underscores the pressing need for the redevelopment to accommodate growing passenger traffic and alleviate existing spatial constraints.

The delays, while frustrating, are framed within the context of a meticulous and large-scale infrastructural overhaul. With funding secured and partial work underway, railway authorities express confidence that the project is now progressing systematically toward its revised completion goal.
