Southern Railway's Palakkad Division Achieves Historic Freight Milestone in February

The Palakkad division of Southern Railway has reported a landmark achievement in freight performance for the month of February, underscoring robust industrial and agricultural activity across the states of Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. This performance highlights the division's critical role in supporting regional economic growth through efficient rail logistics.

Exceeding Targets with Impressive Growth Figures

Against a set target of 0.6 million tonnes (MT) for February, the division successfully loaded 0.8 MT of freight. This represents a remarkable 32.9% growth over the target, marking the highest ever performance recorded in February for the division. Moreover, the achievement reflects a healthy 8.5% year-on-year growth, indicating sustained and increasing demand for rail freight services across the region.

Strong Fiscal Year Performance and Commodity Highlights

For the fiscal year 2025-26 up to February, the division has loaded 6.5 MT of freight, compared to 6.0 MT in the same period of the previous fiscal year 2024-25. This translates to a robust 8.7% growth, demonstrating consistent improvement in freight operations.

Cement loading witnessed an exceptional surge, with a 267.5% increase compared to February of the previous year. The division has successfully captured new cement traffic from Malabar Cements in Walayar and maintained strong cooperation with Adani Cements in Madukkarai. These efforts are vital for the cement and infrastructure supply chain, with the annual cement loading target of 0.04 MT already surpassed. Cumulative cement loading up to February reached 1,12,000 tonnes.

Fertiliser loading also showed significant growth, increasing by 71% compared to February 2025. The annual target of 1.1 MT has been exceeded, with cumulative loading achieving 1.2 MT. Additionally, loading of other commodities such as limestone, laterite, and palm oil experienced a remarkable 755.7% growth over the previous year.

Detailed Freight Movements in February

In February alone, the division moved substantial quantities of key commodities to various goods sheds within its jurisdiction. Specifically, it transported 1,69,935 tonnes of cement, 65,260 tonnes of foodgrains, and 7,345 tonnes of fertiliser. These figures underscore the division's capacity to handle diverse freight needs efficiently.

Reflecting Regional Economic Trends

The impressive freight growth demonstrates an increasing preference for rail transport among industries and agricultural stakeholders across Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. According to an official release, this trend is driven by the reliability and cost-effectiveness of rail services, which support both industrial expansion and agricultural productivity in the region.

This milestone not only highlights the operational excellence of the Palakkad division but also points to broader economic vitality in southern India, with rail freight playing a pivotal role in connecting markets and facilitating trade.
