Noida Labour Department Takes Strict Action Against Contractors

The labour department in Noida has taken decisive enforcement measures by cancelling the licenses of ten labour contractors due to significant violations under the Contract Labour (Regulation and Abolition) Act of 1970. This action follows a series of inspections aimed at ensuring industrial peace and safeguarding the interests of workers across the region.

Inspections Reveal Widespread Non-Compliance

Additional Labour Commissioner Rakesh Dwivedi confirmed that the department has been actively conducting inspections and enforcement drives. "On Friday, we served notices to 203 contractors in this regard. In view of irregularities found in compliance with labour laws, licenses of 10 contractors have been cancelled," he stated. The violations uncovered during these inspections were severe and included multiple instances of workers being forced to work overtime without receiving adequate compensation, as well as delays in salary and bonus payments.

Connection to Recent Industrial Protests

These grievances are believed to have directly contributed to the recent industrial protests in Noida, which escalated into violent incidents. The protests resulted in widespread damage, including vehicles being set ablaze and police officers being pelted with stones in several sectors. In response to the violence, the department has sent a formal letter to the labour commissioner, recommending that the contractors involved be blacklisted. Additionally, notices have been issued to 43 other contractors, seeking explanations regarding their potential role in the unrest.

Government Issues Stern Warning to Contractors

Earlier in the week, the Uttar Pradesh government had issued a clear warning to labour contractors and outsourcing agencies operating in Noida and Greater Noida. The warning stated that any agency found to have workers involved in violence or disruption would face severe consequences, including blacklisting and license cancellation. Infrastructure and Industrial Development Commissioner Deepak Kumar emphasized the critical role of outsourcing agencies in running industries and generating employment. "It is also their responsibility to keep workers disciplined and properly trained so that no disorder or unrest arises. If any agency or its employees engage in disruptive behaviour, the agency concerned will be held responsible. In such cases, action will be taken to blacklist the agency and cancel its licence," he explained.

Ongoing Efforts to Maintain Industrial Harmony

The labour department's actions underscore a broader commitment to enforcing labour laws and maintaining industrial harmony in the region. By cancelling licenses and issuing warnings, authorities aim to prevent future violations and protect workers from exploitation. This proactive approach is expected to serve as a deterrent to other contractors who might be neglecting their legal obligations, thereby fostering a more compliant and peaceful industrial environment in Noida and surrounding areas.
