Nashik Hospitality Sector Faces Operational Crisis Due to LPG Cylinder Shortage

In a significant development impacting the hospitality industry, numerous hotels and restaurants across Nashik have initiated substantial menu reductions to manage the ongoing rationing of commercial LPG cylinders. This supply constraint has forced establishments to eliminate specific dishes, particularly those requiring sustained high-heat cooking, leading to operational adjustments and concerns over potential temporary shutdowns.

Menu Cuts and Operational Adjustments

Several eateries have already removed popular items such as dosa and uttapa from their offerings. These dishes, which originate from South Indian cuisine, demand continuous heat on a griddle, making them unsustainable under current fuel limitations. Furthermore, many restaurants are now limiting their main-course selections to just two options: typically one non-vegetarian or vegetarian dish, accompanied by a Chinese preparation.

Hotelier Shailesh Kute explained the rationale behind these changes, stating, "We have discontinued preparing dishes from South India that need the griddle to remain hot constantly. More items are being phased out to conserve our cylinder usage." Another owner, Shridhar Shetti, highlighted the severity of the situation, noting that their commercial LPG stock is depleting rapidly as agencies and distributors have ceased cylinder supplies. "Starting Thursday, we will stop serving dosa and uttapa and offer only two main-course items. In the non-vegetarian category, we will provide only chicken masala, with the second option being a Chinese dish," he added.

Industry-Wide Impact and Advocacy Efforts

Nashik district is home to approximately 8,000 hotels and restaurants, making this issue a critical concern for the local economy. According to Sanjay Chavan, president of the Association of Bar, Hotel and Restaurants (ABHAR), the supply halt over the past three to four days could soon compel many establishments to close temporarily due to the unavailability of commercial cylinders.

In response, a delegation from the Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture (MACCIA) met with District Collector Ayush Prasad on Wednesday. Led by MACCIA Vice-President Sanjay Sonawane, the group urged immediate action to stabilize commercial cylinder supply. They emphasized that industrial closures resulting from fuel shortages could adversely affect the workforce and lead to increased unemployment. Collector Prasad assured the delegation that measures would be taken to regularize supply and curb any black marketing activities.

Contrasting Fuel Availability

While the commercial LPG sector faces challenges, the supply of domestic LPG cylinders remains unaffected, with no reported shortages for household use. Additionally, CNG pump operators have confirmed smooth distribution across outlets, indicating that the issue is specific to commercial fuel supplies rather than a broader energy crisis.

This situation underscores the vulnerability of the hospitality industry to supply chain disruptions and highlights the urgent need for coordinated efforts between authorities and business stakeholders to mitigate economic impacts and ensure operational continuity.
