Mumbai-Surat Suburban Train Services in Planning: Vande Metro & Upgraded MEMUs Considered
Western Railway is actively exploring the introduction of long-term suburban-style train operations between Mumbai and Surat, aiming to cater to the rapidly growing commuter demand along this busy corridor. This initiative seeks to enhance intercity travel convenience and frequency, potentially transforming regional connectivity.
Vande Metro as a Regional Travel Option
Vande Metro trains, built on the advanced Vande Bharat platform, are being considered as a prime candidate to replace existing Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) services. These self-propelled trains are specifically designed for short intercity travel, offering a blend of metro-like standing and seating configurations to accommodate high-density passenger flows efficiently.
Passenger capacity and speed: A standard 12-coach Vande Metro rake can carry approximately 1,150 seated passengers and 2,058 standing passengers, providing substantial capacity for commuter routes. With a maximum operational speed of 130 km/h, these trains are well-suited for regional suburban travel while maintaining passenger comfort and reducing journey times.
Upgraded MEMU Trains to Be Utilized
Instead of conventional Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) locals, future services are likely to deploy upgraded MEMU trains. These enhanced trains are engineered for longer-distance commuter routes and come equipped with improved passenger amenities, including onboard toilets, to ensure a more comfortable travel experience for daily commuters.
Existing Services and Latent Demand
Currently, the Virar–Surat MEMU service and various long-distance trains provide connectivity between Mumbai and Surat. Railway officials highlight that these existing operations demonstrate significant latent commuter demand, which justifies the planning for more frequent and commuter-oriented train services to better serve the population.
Surat Station Redevelopment to Support Operations
A major redevelopment project at Surat station, valued at Rs 1,477 crore, is underway to bolster future suburban services. This project includes the addition of two new platforms, which are essential for accommodating increased train frequency. Construction is scheduled for completion by 2027, paving the way for enhanced operational capabilities.
Long-Term Planning and Considerations
Western Railway's exploration includes evaluating various train models, with Namo Bharat trains also under consideration as part of the broader strategy. The focus remains on developing a reliable, high-frequency suburban network that mirrors the efficiency of local train services, thereby addressing the commuting needs of thousands along the Mumbai-Surat route.
