Mumbai's Long-Awaited Metro Line 5 Receives Fresh Operational Deadline
After years of persistent delays and slow progress, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region's much-anticipated Metro Line 5 has finally been assigned a new operational deadline. Officials have now indicated that the first phase of this critical infrastructure project, often cited as one of the slowest progressing metro developments in the region, could become operational by January 2027.
Confidence Expressed in Final Stages of Work
MLA Mahesh Choughule has expressed strong confidence that the ongoing construction work is now entering its final stages. Following a comprehensive joint inspection conducted on Thursday by officials from the Bhiwandi civic body, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), and metro authorities, Choughule stated that all technical aspects of the project are expected to be completed by December 2026.
"An MMRDA official confirmed that if everything proceeds according to plan, the metro could be opened for passenger service by January 2027," Choughule reported after the inspection. This announcement follows earlier in the day meetings on metro-related infrastructure chaired by Mayor Narayan Chaudhary, highlighting renewed governmental focus on completing this vital transportation link.
Detailed On-Ground Inspection Conducted
As part of the renewed push toward completion, officials carried out an extensive on-ground inspection of the stretch between Anjurphata and Dhamankar Naka, where construction work is currently most active. This thorough examination of the project's physical progress represents a significant step toward addressing the delays that have plagued Metro Line 5's development timeline.
The Orange Line, as this Thane–Bhiwandi stretch is commonly known, represents just the first phase of a much larger project with an estimated total cost of Rs 3,771 crore across three planned phases. The renewed deadline and increased official attention suggest that authorities are now prioritizing the completion of this essential public transportation infrastructure that will serve thousands of daily commuters in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
The fresh timeline comes as welcome news for residents who have endured years of construction disruptions without seeing operational benefits. With the new January 2027 target now officially communicated, stakeholders hope this represents a firm commitment rather than another in a series of postponed deadlines for this crucial metro connection.
