MMRDA to Build 7 Foot Over Bridges Along Metro Line 9

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has announced plans to construct seven foot over bridges (FOBs) along the 11-kilometer Metro Line 9 corridor connecting Dahisar East and Mira-Bhayandar. This initiative aims to enhance pedestrian safety and provide seamless access to metro stations.

Locations of the Foot Over Bridges

The FOBs will be built under MMRDA's Multi-Modal Integration (MMI) initiative. They will be located at Dahisar Toll Naka and Miragaon on the Western Express Highway, as well as at Kashigaon, Shivar Garden, Maxus Mall, Veg Sagar Hotel, and Sai Baba Nagar on the Mira-Bhayandar Road.

Addressing Pedestrian Safety Challenges

Officials stated that these grade-separated crossings are designed to tackle pedestrian movement difficulties along these two busy arterial roads. Heavy traffic and wide carriageways currently make crossing roads challenging and unsafe for pedestrians.

Specifications and Features

The bridges will range from 80 meters to 145 meters in length and will have a standard width of three meters. Each FOB will be equipped with lifts, staircases, and CCTV surveillance systems to ensure safety and accessibility.

Project Contract and Cost

MMRDA has awarded the contract for this project, valued at Rs 82.09 crore, to a joint venture of Speco Infrastructure and PRS Infraprojects LLP.

Benefits for Commuters

According to MMRDA, the FOBs will improve access to Metro Line 9 stations, facilitate smoother commuter movement, support passenger dispersal during peak hours, and strengthen last-mile connectivity. The authority expects these facilities to encourage greater metro ridership while reducing reliance on signalized road crossings and improving overall traffic flow.

Metro Line 9 Overview

Metro Line 9, an extension of Metro Line 7, connects Dahisar East with Mira-Bhayandar. Phase I of this corridor was commissioned on April 7 this year, and the remaining works are nearing completion. Officials mentioned that the FOBs are being planned to ensure safe pedestrian access from the first day of full-scale metro operations.

MMRDA Commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee stated that the project aims to improve station accessibility and create a safer, more convenient travel experience for commuters.
