Maruti Suzuki Drives Gender Diversity in Auto Manufacturing

In a significant push for inclusivity, Maruti Suzuki India Limited is making concerted efforts to enhance the participation of women in its manufacturing operations. Currently, approximately 190 women are employed at the company's production facilities located in Gurgaon and the nearby industrial hub of Manesar. This number is poised to grow as the automotive giant undertakes deliberate measures to foster a more gender-balanced workforce.

Young Women Pioneering Shop Floor Roles

The majority of these female employees are in their early twenties, with many hailing from regions outside Haryana, including states like Uttarakhand. These young professionals are actively engaged in critical shop floor functions, working shoulder-to-shoulder with their male colleagues. Their responsibilities span diverse areas such as production quality control, instrument panel sub-assembly, rear door sub-assembly, transmission assembly, and K & Z series engine assembly.

Importantly, these women receive the same comprehensive on-the-job training and skill development programs as male workers, ensuring equitable opportunities for career advancement within the organization.

Voices from the Shop Floor: Empowerment and Inspiration

Tanuja Nainwal, a 21-year-old from Uttarakhand, shared her experience: "This is my first job. I have been working here for over a year now and I am immensely proud of myself. I feel very secure working even in the evening shift as the work environment is safe and transport is provided."

Her colleague, 20-year-old Saloni Mehendiratta from Ambala, expressed her aspirations: "I feel empowered working here on the shop floor performing tasks similar to my male counterparts. It provides girls like me a platform to hone my skills and I want to inspire other girls to become independent."

Overcoming Challenges: From Parental Consent to Skill Development

Rahul Bharti, Executive Officer of Human Resources at Maruti Suzuki, acknowledged that hiring women has faced certain hurdles. "In some places from where we have hired these women, we had to go and talk to their parents to convince them to let their daughters join the workforce," he stated.

Bharti emphasized the power of success stories: "I feel there is nothing stronger and more efficient than word of mouth. Once the success stories of these women are out there, more girls will be encouraged to join this industry."

He also highlighted a systemic issue: "Historically, fewer women have taken up ITI courses, such as mechanical and electrical. So, the pool available for selection was small. More women need to opt for these courses so that the industry has a better pool of women candidates."

Infrastructure and Cultural Transformations

Salil Lal, another Executive Officer in Human Resources at Maruti Suzuki, detailed the company's proactive steps. "Since shop floor workers have mostly been men, a detailed study was undertaken to understand the requirements of women employees, and specific infrastructure changes were made on the shop floor to ensure the convenience and security of women employees," he explained.

The modifications include:

  • Adequate restrooms for women
  • Designated changing areas
  • Creche facilities
  • Enhanced safety measures such as guards on duty and patrolling during evening shifts

Furthermore, the company has initiated sensitization training for all team members to cultivate a positive shift in mindset and promote an inclusive work culture. POSH (Prevention of Sexual Harassment) training is mandatory for 100% of employees to ensure a safe and respectful work environment.

This holistic approach underscores Maruti Suzuki's commitment to not only increasing numerical representation but also creating a supportive ecosystem where women can thrive in traditionally male-dominated manufacturing roles.
