Lucknow Hoteliers Protest 500% Licence Fee Hike, Seek Rajnath Singh's Intervention
Hotel and restaurant owners in Lucknow have raised strong objections to a steep increase in licence fees imposed by the Lucknow Municipal Corporation, urging Defence Minister and Lucknow MP Rajnath Singh to intervene. A delegation of the Lucknow Hotel, Guest House and Restaurant Owners Association submitted a memorandum demanding immediate withdrawal of the revised fee structure to Singh on Sunday.
Association Calls Fee Hike Arbitrary and Unjustified
The association, led by Surendra Sharma, called the civic body's move to implement a five-fold increase in licence fees for hotels, restaurants, and eateries "arbitrary and unjustified." The traders highlighted that the hospitality sector is already facing severe challenges due to disruption in commercial gas supply amid the ongoing Gulf crisis, leading to operational difficulties and partial closures of many establishments.
Operational Challenges Compounded by External Factors
The hospitality sector in Lucknow is grappling with multiple issues that have strained their operations:
- Commercial Gas Supply Disruption: The ongoing Gulf crisis has led to significant disruptions in the supply of commercial gas, causing operational hurdles for many establishments.
- Partial Closures: Many hotels and restaurants have been forced to partially close due to the combined impact of gas shortages and increased operational costs.
- Financial Strain: The five-fold increase in licence fees adds to the existing financial burden, making it difficult for businesses to sustain operations.
Rajnath Singh Assures Action and Forwards Memorandum
Singh assured the delegation that the matter would be addressed promptly. He reportedly forwarded the memorandum to Mayor Sushma Kharkwal and emphasized the need to provide relief to the hospitality sector. The Defence Minister's intervention is seen as a crucial step in addressing the concerns of the hoteliers and restaurant owners.
Broader Implications for Lucknow's Hospitality Industry
The licence fee hike and the associated challenges have broader implications for Lucknow's hospitality industry:
- Economic Impact: The increased costs could lead to higher prices for consumers, potentially affecting tourism and local dining culture.
- Employment Concerns: The sector employs a significant number of people, and operational difficulties could lead to job losses.
- Sector Sustainability: The combined pressures of gas supply issues and fee hikes threaten the long-term sustainability of many businesses.
The hoteliers and restaurant owners are hopeful that the intervention by Rajnath Singh will lead to a reconsideration of the fee structure and provide much-needed relief to the struggling hospitality sector in Lucknow.
