Jharkhand Industries Grapple with LPG Shortage, Risking Worker Retrenchment

The Federation of Jharkhand Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FJCCI) has raised alarm over the ongoing LPG crisis, warning that it could severely impact multiple industries, potentially leading to the retrenchment of workers and significant hardship for their families. This development comes as authorities intensify efforts to curb illegal activities like profiteering and hoarding.

FJCCI Expresses Concerns Over Industrial Impact

In a meeting held on Monday, FJCCI president Aditya Malhotra highlighted the vulnerabilities of sectors heavily reliant on LPG. "During discussions with Ranchi deputy commissioner Manjunath Bhajantri and other officials, we emphasized that hotels, banquet halls, and various industrial units, which depend solely on LPG for manufacturing, would face severe disruptions if the crisis worsens," Malhotra stated. He further sought clarity from the Ranchi administration on their action plan to address future shortages.

Malhotra also inquired about the priorities for LPG cylinder distribution during such emergencies. "We discussed measures for LPG conservation and alternatives, including the promotion of induction stoves for cooking, to mitigate the impact," he added, underscoring the need for proactive strategies.

Police Crack Down on Hoarding and Black-Marketing

In a related move, Dhanbad police have issued stern warnings against profiteering, black-marketing, and hoarding of essential commodities, with a particular focus on LPG cylinders. SSP Prabhat Kumar declared that any attempts to exploit the situation at the expense of public welfare will result in strict legal action.

"In these sensitive times, when the nation is united to tackle potential disruptions, certain elements are trying to turn the crisis into an opportunity for unlawful gain. No one will be allowed to play with the interests of common people," Kumar asserted. He emphasized that selling goods above prescribed rates or creating artificial shortages will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

Kumar highlighted that hoarding and black-marketing of items such as food, medicines, daily-use products, fuel, and cooking gas constitute serious offences, warranting immediate intervention to protect consumer interests.

Broader Implications for Jharkhand's Economy

The LPG crisis poses a significant threat to Jharkhand's industrial landscape, with potential ripple effects on employment and economic stability. As industries brace for possible cutbacks, the combined efforts of business leaders and law enforcement aim to safeguard both supply chains and public welfare. The situation underscores the urgent need for coordinated responses to prevent further escalation and ensure equitable access to essential resources.
