Kutch Industries Demand Comprehensive Railway Master Plan for Enhanced Connectivity
Industries in the Kutch district of Gujarat are intensifying their calls for a comprehensive railway master plan and improved train connectivity, driven by rapid industrialization, a growing workforce population, and increasing tourist footfall. The Federation of Kutch Industries Association (FOKIA) representatives presented a series of critical demands during the recent 36th Zonal Railway Users Consultative Committee (ZRUCC) meeting of Western Railway in Mumbai.
Key Demands and Railway Response
The meeting, chaired by Pradeep Kumar, General Manager of Western Railway (IRSME), saw FOKIA's ZRUCC member Bhaven Thakkar advocate for the swift implementation of the proposed gauge conversion of the Bhuj–Naliya railway line. Additionally, Thakkar pushed for the extension of the new broad gauge line from Luna to Vyor–Lakhpat. In a press statement, FOKIA quoted Pradeep Kumar as confirming that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for these projects has been prepared and will be forwarded to the Railway Board in New Delhi upon approval.
Thakkar emphasized the urgent need for direct high-speed rail connectivity, citing the absence of an international airport in Kutch. He stated, "In the absence of an international airport in Kutch, there's a need for direct high-speed rail connectivity to support economic growth and mobility."
Proposals for Enhanced Services and Infrastructure
FOKIA also pressed for the introduction of Vande Bharat Sleeper Express services between Bhuj–Delhi and Bhuj–Mumbai, highlighting the significant Kutchi population residing in Mumbai and abroad. FOKIA Managing Director Nimish Phadke added that improved railway services would benefit thousands of people engaged at Kandla–Gandhidham and Mundra ports.
Phadke elaborated, "We have suggested exploring the possibility of a parallel public rail line to the existing Adipur–Mundra line and operating regular DEMU and MEMU services for the growing workforce. This would enhance efficiency and reduce congestion."
The organization further called for expediting the Bhuj–Khavda rail line, noting that over 50,000 workers are engaged in projects worth approximately Rs 2 lakh crore in the Khavda region. This demand underscores the critical role of rail infrastructure in supporting large-scale industrial and developmental activities.
Impact on Industrialization and Tourism
The push for a railway master plan comes as Kutch experiences rapid industrialization, with ports like Mundra and Kandla driving economic activity. The increasing population of workers and rising tourist numbers have strained existing transport networks, making enhanced rail connectivity a priority for sustainable growth.
- Gauge conversion of Bhuj–Naliya line to improve freight and passenger capacity.
- Extension of broad gauge line from Luna to Vyor–Lakhpat to connect remote areas.
- Introduction of Vande Bharat Sleeper Express for long-distance travel efficiency.
- Development of parallel rail lines and regular DEMU/MEMU services for workforce mobility.
- Acceleration of Bhuj–Khavda rail line to support massive industrial projects.
These initiatives aim to bolster Kutch's position as a key industrial hub while catering to the logistical needs of its expanding economy and tourism sector.
