This drastic measure comes as a response to uncontrollable crowds and overwhelming demand for fuel, which continues to exceed the current rationing limits of Rs200 for two-wheelers and Rs2,000 for cars and three-wheelers.
Persistent Queues and Operational Challenges
Despite the existing rationing protocols, numerous petrol pumps across the city remained closed on Friday, while those that were operational witnessed extensive queues forming from the early morning hours. Although waiting times have seen a slight reduction compared to previous days, motorists are still enduring delays of 30 to 60 minutes to refuel their vehicles.
Credit Term Changes Add to Operators' Burden
Beyond the immediate issue of crowd management, petrol pump operators are confronting a substantial shift in credit terms from oil marketing companies. "We are now required to make advance payments amounting to several lakhs to secure a single tanker load," revealed one operator who spoke on condition of anonymity. "Previously, the companies provided tankers on at least a one-day credit basis, but that facility has been abruptly discontinued." This change in payment policy has placed additional financial strain on operators already struggling with high demand.
District Administration Enforces Bulk Sale Ban
In a parallel move to alleviate the situation, District Collector Amol Yedge has issued a formal order prohibiting the bulk sale of fuel in containers, cans, and bottles. The immediate impact of this directive was evident on the ground, as petrol pump operators strictly enforced the ban. Officials have noted that this restriction on bulk sales has contributed to a marginal reduction in waiting periods at petrol stations, though challenges persist.
