Kochi's Premium Bevco Outlet Experiences Unprecedented Sales Surge
As temperatures rise rapidly in Kochi, the collective desire for a chilled respite among residents has become almost tangible. This craving is vividly reflected in the "whopping" sales figures at the pilot premium outlet of the Kerala State Beverages Corporation (Bevco), located at the Vyttila Metro station.
Record-Breaking Revenue Figures
Just two months after its launch, the fully air-conditioned outlet, named High Spirits… A Bevco Boutique, has seen its sales skyrocket. On weekends, the outlet averages an impressive Rs 30 lakh per day, while weekday sales reach around Rs 12.5 lakh daily. The true extent of its popularity was highlighted during the Easter festivities, when the outlet achieved a staggering single-day turnover of Rs 54 lakh on the eve of the holiday.
"This was way beyond our expectations," stated regional manager Anoop R. "Now we are going to set up an automatic beer vending machine there within a week. Consumers will be able to obtain chilled beer cans by scanning a QR code and making a payment."
Consumer Preferences and Pricing
Beer is the most in-demand product at the outlet, with sales exceeding Rs 2 lakh on weekends, followed by foreign-made liquor. The pricing structure is as follows:
- Beer prices start at Rs 130.
- A bottle of beer is priced at Rs 180.
- A can of beer costs Rs 270.
- Imported Johnnie Walker Blue Label scotch whisky is available for approximately Rs 30,000 per 750 ml bottle.
Expansion Plans and Operational Details
Bevco has announced plans to open another premium outlet at the Vadakkekotta Metro station. "We have initiated the process, such as applying for the necessary licence, but it will require a little more time," added an official.
The Vyttila outlet, which opened on February 20, is the largest super premium liquor outlet in the state, allowing consumers to purchase premium brands without the inconvenience of crowded retail locations. Spanning 4,600 square meters on the ground floor of the Metro station, it has a storage capacity of up to 7,000 liquor cases.
Metro Collaboration and Regulations
In April 2025, Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) and Bevco entered into an agreement to establish premium liquor outlets at Vyttila and Vadakkekotta stations. This initiative is part of KMRL's strategy to lease commercial spaces at Metro stations and Water Metro terminals to boost non-revenue income.
High Spirits is the third super premium outlet launched by Bevco, following similar establishments in Thrissur and Kozhikode. Authorities anticipate that the outlet's presence will lead to increased ridership for the Kochi Metro.
Purchase limits at the outlet are clearly defined:
- Up to three litres of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL).
- Up to two litres of Foreign Made Foreign Liquor (FMFL).
- Up to 3.5 litres of beer.
The store operates from 10 am to 9 pm daily.
Transport and Consumption Policies
Consumers are permitted to carry sealed liquor bottles on Metro trains. However, public alcohol consumption or travelling with opened liquor bottles is strictly prohibited, according to sources. Vyttila, being the busiest transit hub in the state, serves as a key intersection for the Kochi Metro, Water Metro, and bus terminal, enhancing the outlet's accessibility and appeal.
