Kia India Enhances Sonet SUV with New Affordable Automatic Variants
Kia India has significantly expanded the automatic gearbox options for its popular Kia Sonet compact SUV by introducing more budget-friendly variants into the lineup. This strategic update allows buyers to access automatic transmissions from lower trim levels, positioning the Sonet as one of the most accessible automatic SUVs in its highly competitive segment.
New Diesel Automatic Variant Details
On the diesel front, Kia has launched a new HTE(O) variant equipped with a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. This model is priced at an attractive Rs 9.77 lakh, ex-showroom. It is powered by the familiar 1.5-litre diesel engine that delivers 116 horsepower and 250 Nm of torque. In terms of fuel efficiency, the diesel automatic variant achieves an ARAI-rated 18.6 kmpl, while the manual diesel version claims 22.3 kmpl.
Petrol Automatic Options and Pricing
For petrol enthusiasts, Kia has introduced a new HTK(O) variant featuring a 7-speed Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT). Priced at Rs 9,89,900, ex-showroom, this variant is powered by a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine that generates 120 hp and 172 Nm of peak torque. The same 7-speed DCT gearbox is also available in the HTK+(O) trim. With this move, the Sonet becomes the first model in its segment to offer a 7-speed DCT automatic transmission at a price point under Rs 10 lakh.
Engine and Transmission Lineup
The Sonet continues to be offered with three engine choices. These include:
- A 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 83 hp and 115 Nm of torque, paired exclusively with a 5-speed manual gearbox.
- The 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, which now offers automatic transmission options through the new variants.
- The 1.5-litre diesel engine, also available with automatic gearbox configurations.
It is important to note that only the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engines provide automatic gearbox options, catering to diverse buyer preferences.
Additional Updates and Market Context
Alongside the variant enhancements, Kia has introduced a new 'Magma Red' colour option for the Sonet, adding to its aesthetic appeal. Currently, the Sonet is priced from Rs 7.30 lakh, ex-showroom, in India. It competes fiercely with rivals such as the Mahindra XUV 3XO, Hyundai Venue, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Tata Nexon, and Skoda Kylaq in the sub-4 metre SUV segment, known for its intense competition and evolving consumer demands.
This expansion of automatic variants underscores Kia's commitment to making advanced transmission technology more accessible to a broader range of customers, potentially boosting the Sonet's market position and appeal in India's dynamic automotive landscape.
