Thiruvananthapuram: In a significant development for the city's commercial infrastructure, General Education and Labour Minister V Sivankutty inaugurated a modern warehouse complex near Chalai market on Friday. The event marks a key step in enhancing economic growth and employment opportunities in the region.

Boosting Employment and Commerce

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Minister Sivankutty emphasized that economic growth and the expansion of commerce are crucial for generating employment. He highlighted that once the warehouse becomes fully operational, it is expected to create both direct and indirect job opportunities across various sectors.

  • Logistics: Enhanced handling and movement of goods.
  • Goods Handling: Improved efficiency in storage and distribution.
  • Packaging: Opportunities in processing and preparing products.
  • Transportation: Increased demand for transport services.

Sivankutty stated, "A city becomes truly smart not merely by constructing modern buildings, but when such projects benefit ordinary workers and traders." This underscores the government's focus on inclusive development that supports local communities.

Project Details and Development Milestone

The warehouse complex, built at a cost of approximately Rs 18.66 crore, spans 2.24 acres with a built-up area of about 2,350 square meters. Located along the Killipalam-Attakulangara bypass, it is designed to streamline goods movement and reduce traffic congestion in the crowded Chalai area, one of the city's oldest and busiest commercial hubs.

The project was completed within the stipulated timeframe, attributed to the government's strong commitment and careful planning. It represents a significant milestone in the development of Chalai, addressing a long-standing demand from traders for a publicly owned warehouse near the market.

Collaborative Efforts and Future Initiatives

The facility was constructed through the joint efforts of the Thiruvananthapuram Development Authority (Trida) and Smart City Thiruvananthapuram Ltd. Minister Sivankutty congratulated the officials and workers involved for their dedication in completing the project.

He also noted that several initiatives are currently being implemented under the Smart City mission to transform the infrastructure and urban landscape of Thiruvananthapuram. This warehouse is part of broader efforts to modernize the city and support sustainable economic growth.

Overall, the inauguration of this state-of-the-art warehouse complex is poised to boost local commerce, create jobs, and contribute to the smart city vision for Thiruvananthapuram, benefiting traders, workers, and the community at large.
