Karnataka to Expand Food Processing Infrastructure with Two New Parks
In a significant move to boost the state's agro-processing sector, Karnataka is poised to establish two new food parks in Shivamogga and Vijayapura. Officials from Food Karnataka Limited have confirmed that detailed project reports (DPRs) for these initiatives are anticipated to be finalized within the next 10 to 15 days. This development aligns with the state's broader strategy to enhance food processing capabilities and support local economies.
Project Details and Strategic Locations
The proposed food park in Shivamogga will be developed on a substantial 87.6-acre plot, while the Vijayapura park will span approximately 75 acres. These locations have been strategically chosen based on thorough assessments of local demand and the availability of raw materials in the respective regions. The parks are designed to incorporate a variety of processing units, including cold storage facilities for fruits and vegetables, milk packaging operations, bakery units, and wine-related processing activities.
Officials emphasized that the DPRs are currently being prepared to secure financial concurrence, with plans to seek funding under the Nabard food processing fund. This funding mechanism is expected to provide the necessary capital to kickstart these projects and ensure their successful implementation.
Background and Implementation Challenges
The initiative to set up food parks across Karnataka was first announced in 2022 as part of a state program aimed at establishing at least one food park in each district. However, the rollout has faced delays primarily due to challenges in land allotment by the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) and the agriculture department. A senior official from Food Karnataka Limited highlighted that earlier proposals, including one near Bengaluru, could not proceed due to the non-availability of suitable land.
To mitigate future obstacles, the state is focusing on ensuring that the allocated plots are used exclusively for agro-processing purposes. This approach aims to streamline operations and maximize the economic impact of the parks on local communities.
Current Food Park Landscape in Karnataka
Karnataka currently boasts eight food parks, with five of them fully operational. These parks collectively cover over 740 acres and play a crucial role in the state's food processing ecosystem. Here is a breakdown of some key operational parks:
- Malur Food Park (87 acres): 22 units have been allotted, with 14 currently running.
- Bagalkot Food Park (100 acres): 18 units are allotted, but only six are operational.
- Hiriyur Food Park (106+ acres): Hosts eight running units.
- Jewargi Food Park (105 acres): Seven units are functioning.
In addition to these, Karnataka is home to mega food parks such as the India Food Park in Tumkur, which spans 110 acres and is operating at maximum capacity. Meanwhile, the Favorich Mega Food Park in Mandya, covering 60 acres, is still under construction and expected to further bolster the state's food processing infrastructure upon completion.
Future Outlook and Economic Impact
The establishment of the new food parks in Shivamogga and Vijayapura is expected to drive significant economic growth by creating employment opportunities, enhancing value addition to local agricultural produce, and reducing post-harvest losses. By leveraging Nabard funding and focusing on region-specific needs, Karnataka aims to strengthen its position as a leader in the food processing industry. The successful implementation of these parks will not only benefit farmers and entrepreneurs but also contribute to the state's overall food security and economic resilience.
