Karnataka Farmers Bear Brunt of Middle East Conflict as Export Routes Halt
Just days after the outbreak of conflict in West Asia, farmers in Karnataka are already experiencing significant economic distress. With air travel severely disrupted, suppliers of perishable agricultural products—from eggs and milk derivatives to fresh vegetables—are facing mounting losses as their crucial export channels to Middle Eastern markets grind to a halt.
Flight Cancellations Strand Organic Exports
Madhu Chandan S C, founder and CEO of Organic Mandya, revealed that a shipment of 2,000 bottles of organic ghee is currently stuck in Bengaluru due to widespread flight cancellations. "This consignment was en route to the United States via Dubai, but the ongoing aviation disruptions have left the container stranded in Bengaluru," he explained, highlighting the immediate impact on high-value organic exports.
Egg Export Crisis Threatens Local Market Stability
Satish Babu, zonal president of the National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC), issued a stark warning about the egg industry. "Daily, approximately 70 lakh eggs are exported from southern states to Arab nations. With exports now suspended, this substantial inventory will inevitably flood local markets in South India, creating a dangerous supply glut," he cautioned.
Babu further noted that local demand for eggs has already weakened due to seasonal summer patterns and the ongoing Ramadan period. "The export disruption compounds an already challenging situation, potentially devastating poultry farmers," he added. Market data confirms this trend, with wholesale egg prices dropping from ₹530 per 100 units on Thursday to ₹510 in Mysuru and Bengaluru markets by Monday.
Vegetable Growers Face Impending Price Collapse
Badagalapura Nagendra, president of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha, expressed grave concerns for vegetable producers. "Middle Eastern countries are vital export destinations for our vegetables. If exports do not resume promptly, we anticipate a severe price crash that could cripple growers," he warned, emphasizing the broader agricultural vulnerability.
