IndiGo has launched a new fare product called IndiGo Lite, which offers cheaper tickets for economy class passengers who travel without checked baggage. The fare is available on both domestic and international routes, according to an announcement by the airline on July 1, 2026.
How the New Fare Works
Passengers opting for IndiGo Lite are allowed only cabin baggage, typically one piece weighing up to 7 kg, and must forgo any checked luggage. This unbundled fare is designed to appeal to budget-conscious travelers, especially those on short-haul trips or business travelers who carry only hand luggage. The airline expects the new option to reduce turnaround times and streamline boarding processes, as fewer bags need to be loaded into the cargo hold.
Impact on Passengers and Operations
IndiGo stated that the IndiGo Lite fare is part of its strategy to offer more flexibility and choice to customers. By separating baggage from the base fare, the airline can lower the entry price for tickets, potentially attracting more price-sensitive fliers. Industry analysts note that this move aligns with global trends among low-cost carriers, such as Ryanair and Spirit Airlines, which have successfully implemented similar unbundled pricing models. Standard economy fares with checked baggage allowance remain available for those who require it. IndiGo emphasized that all other services, such as seat selection and priority boarding, are available as add-ons for IndiGo Lite passengers at standard rates.
