Hyundai and TVS Forge Strategic Partnership for Electric Three-Wheeler Development

In a significant move aimed at capturing India's burgeoning last-mile mobility sector, Hyundai Motor Company and TVS Motor Company have officially entered into a strategic partnership. The collaboration focuses on the joint development and commercialisation of electric three-wheelers, with plans to target both the domestic market and potential exports to other emerging economies.

Joint Development Agreement Signed for Next-Generation E3Ws

The companies announced on Monday that they have signed a formal joint development agreement. This pact will see them co-design and manufacture a new generation of battery-powered three-wheelers, a vehicle segment that is fundamental to urban transport and logistics across India. The partnership represents a shift from concept to production, following the unveiling of a prototype at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025.

Joongsun Ko, Senior Vice President of Corporate Strategy & Planning at Hyundai Motor Company, emphasised the broader vision, stating, "We hope the co-developed E3W enables broader access to safer and more sustainable transportation for people across the country."

Complementary Strengths and Defined Roles

According to a detailed statement released by the partners, the collaboration leverages the complementary strengths of both automotive giants. Hyundai, the global carmaker, will take the lead on design and contribute its advanced research and development capabilities. Meanwhile, TVS Motor Company, a leader in the two- and three-wheeler segment, will focus on engineering, manufacturing, and distribution, utilising its deep-rooted presence and expertise in the Indian three-wheeler market.

Sharad Mishra, President of Group Strategy at TVS Motor Company, highlighted the strategic fit, saying, "By bringing together complementary strengths — including our electric three-wheeler platform, engineering expertise, and deep understanding of customer needs — we are well-positioned to deliver purpose-built products for India and additional markets."

Tailored for Indian Conditions with Competitive Localisation

The partners have outlined a clear strategy to tailor the electric three-wheelers specifically for Indian operating conditions. This includes designing vehicles capable of navigating congested city streets and monsoon-affected roads. A key component of their approach is maintaining cost competitiveness through extensive localisation of components, which will help keep prices affordable for the mass market.

Production will be based entirely in India, with TVS expected to oversee not only domestic sales but also future export operations. This aligns with India's position as the world's largest market for three-wheelers, vehicles that are widely used for both passenger transport and goods delivery.

Aligning with National Electrification Goals

This partnership arrives at a crucial time as the Indian government actively promotes the electrification of the transportation sector. The initiative aims to curb urban pollution and reduce the nation's dependence on fossil fuels. The development of electric three-wheelers supports these national objectives by offering a cleaner alternative for last-mile connectivity.

Market Launch and Versatile Applications

The companies have confirmed plans to bring the first model to market after completing necessary testing and securing all regulatory approvals. The vehicles are being designed with features suited for tropical climates and extended daily usage. Furthermore, the electric three-wheelers are envisioned for multiple applications, including:

  • Passenger mobility
  • Cargo and logistics services
  • Emergency and utility services

This versatile approach ensures the vehicles can meet diverse needs within India's dynamic urban and semi-urban landscapes, potentially revolutionising last-mile transportation solutions.
