HSIIDC Announces Major Drain Upgrade in Gurgaon's Global City to Combat Waterlogging

The Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (HSIIDC) has unveiled a significant infrastructure initiative aimed at upgrading a critical section of the Badshapur drain within the Global City area of Gurgaon. With an allocated budget of Rs 160 crore, this project targets a 1.7-kilometer stretch that is currently unlined and open, contrasting with upstream portions that have already been lined and covered.

Addressing Persistent Waterlogging Issues

During periods of heavy rainfall, the existing open stretch of the Badshapur drain significantly impedes water flow, frequently resulting in waterlogging in adjacent neighborhoods. This not only disrupts daily life but also poses risks to property and public safety. The proposed upgrade involves transforming the drain into reinforced cement concrete channels equipped with robust retaining walls.

This structural enhancement is expected to markedly improve water flow efficiency and substantially reduce the likelihood of flooding in the region. A senior HSIIDC official elaborated, "Previously, excess water would spill onto open land during downpours. Once the project is completed, this issue will be effectively mitigated. Additionally, the drain will be reinforced to handle increased load capacities, with all work adhering strictly to National Green Tribunal (NGT) guidelines."

Project Status and Connectivity Improvements

Officials have confirmed that the proposal is currently in its preliminary stages. While in-principle approvals have been obtained from the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), final clearances and detailed timelines are still pending finalization. Beyond flood prevention, HSIIDC is also planning to develop this stretch as a load-bearing drain to enhance regional connectivity.

"The proposal includes provisions for creating a structure capable of supporting vehicular traffic over the drain, thereby facilitating improved movement between Mohammadpur Jharsa and Pataudi Road," the HSIIDC official added. This dual-purpose approach aims to integrate drainage solutions with transportation infrastructure, offering long-term benefits to residents and commuters alike.

Context of Global City Development

Global City represents a major urban development project spearheaded by HSIIDC, encompassing over 1,003 acres across sectors 36, 36B, 37, and 37B along the Dwarka Expressway. Designed as a mixed-use area, it will feature residential, commercial, and institutional spaces upon completion. The first phase, covering approximately 587 acres, is targeted for completion by June 2027.

This initial phase includes comprehensive development of internal roads, water supply systems, drainage and sewerage networks, electricity infrastructure, as well as extensive landscaping and plantation efforts. The drain upgrade is a crucial component of this broader development, ensuring sustainable urban growth.

Parallel Initiatives by GMDA

In a related development, the GMDA is also planning to upgrade an additional 3-kilometer stretch of the Badshapur drain extending towards the Najafgarh drain. The detailed project report for this segment is currently under scrutiny, with tenders expected to be invited once the report is finalized. These coordinated efforts between HSIIDC and GMDA highlight a concerted push to modernize Gurgaon's drainage infrastructure, addressing both current challenges and future urban expansion needs.
