Haldwani Industrial Workers Stage Massive Protest Over Alleged Exploitation

Industrial unrest spread to Uttarakhand's Haldwani on Monday as more than 500 workers from the Mothaldu-based Motherson factory on Bareilly Road staged a significant protest. The demonstration centered on allegations of severe exploitation, excessively long work shifts, and sub-standard food provisions in company canteens.

Key Grievances and Police Deployment

Tension escalated at the multinational facility, which specializes in manufacturing wiring harnesses for the automobile industry, prompting a heavy police deployment to maintain law and order. Employees voiced multiple complaints, including being forced to work 12-hour shifts instead of the standard eight hours without adequate overtime compensation. Female workers reported facing verbal abuse from management and being restricted from taking basic breaks for water or using washrooms.

Further allegations highlighted systemic issues with food quality, with workers describing "undercooked rice and pest-infested food" as routine in company canteens. Additionally, concerns were raised about transportation safety, as workers were ferried on poorly maintained company buses.

Demands and Negotiation Outcomes

The protesters submitted a detailed 14-point demand charter to local authorities. Key demands included a minimum monthly wage of ₹20,000, immediate reinstatement of recently terminated colleagues, and full payment for overtime at double the standard rate. One worker explained, "Our basic salary is ₹12,500, but after deductions, we take home only ₹10,000 to ₹11,000. The management cuts our pay for minor lateness and stops tea and lunch breaks if production targets aren't met."

Following negotiations facilitated by Deputy Labor Commissioner Kamal Joshi, the company accepted 12 of the 14 demands. Subhash Tiwari, HR representative at the Mothaldu plant, stated that wage increases would be implemented once the official government order is issued.

Allegations of Police Misconduct and Investigation

During the peaceful demonstration, social activist Piyush Joshi, who participated in the protest, alleged that Inspector Harpal Singh physically assaulted him by grabbing his neck and threatened him with bodily harm. In response, SP (City) Manoj Kumar Katyal informed that Nainital SSP Manjunath TC has taken cognizance of the incident and directed SP (Crime and Traffic) Jagdish Chandra to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.

The protest underscores ongoing labor issues in industrial zones, with workers advocating for better working conditions and fair treatment. The resolution of most demands marks a significant step toward addressing these concerns in Haldwani.
