Gurgaon Metro's Rs 410 Crore Depot in Sector 33 to Support Cyber City Line

A major depot-cum-workshop for the upcoming elevated metro line connecting Millennium City Centre and Cyber City in Gurgaon will be constructed in Sector 33, officials from Gurgaon Metro Rail Ltd (GMRL) announced. The process to appoint a contractor for this critical facility has already been initiated, marking a significant step forward in the city's public transportation expansion.

Project Details and Cost

The depot, estimated to cost approximately Rs 410 crore, will serve as a central hub for train stabling, inspection, and maintenance operations for the new metro corridor. Once construction commences, the project is expected to take around 21 months to complete. Planned over an area of about 18 hectares, the facility will encompass comprehensive civil, architectural, and electrical and mechanical (E&M) works essential for the efficient operation and upkeep of the metro system.

Land Acquisition and Infrastructure Adjustments

Most of the land required for the depot has already been cleared, with only a small private parcel of approximately 0.8 hectare remaining. This remaining land will be acquired under the provisions of the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (RFCTLARR) Act. A committee under the deputy commissioner will oversee the process, ensuring compensation is provided in accordance with government policies.

Officials emphasized their commitment to resolving the land issue within about three months, aiming to have the entire land parcel available by the time the tender process concludes and the contractor is finalized. Additionally, an HVPNL substation located in the area needs to be relocated to facilitate depot construction. This shifting process is being planned concurrently with the land acquisition efforts to minimize delays.

Metro Corridor and Traffic Impact

The depot will support the Millennium City Centre–Cyber City metro corridor, an elevated line spanning 28.5 kilometers. This line is designed to connect key residential and commercial hubs across Gurgaon, including Subhash Chowk, Hero Honda Chowk, and Udyog Vihar. By providing an alternative mode of transport, the line is anticipated to significantly alleviate traffic congestion on some of the city's busiest roads, improving overall urban mobility.

Construction Phases and Interchanges

In August of last year, Dilip Buildcon Ltd and Ranjit Buildcon Ltd were awarded the contract for the first phase of the metro line construction, valued at Rs 1,277 crore. This phase, expected to take 30 months, involves building a 15.3-kilometer-long metro corridor from Millennium City Centre to Sector 9, with a spur extending to Dwarka Expressway in Sector 101. Pile cap work for this phase began last month.

The first phase will feature several strategic interchanges to enhance connectivity:

  • At Millennium City Centre with the existing Yellow Line
  • At Subhash Chowk with the proposed Bhondsi metro line
  • At Hero Honda Chowk with RRTS corridors
  • At Sector 10 with the bus terminal-cum-depot

Additionally, an underpass at Bakhtawar Chowk will be constructed as part of this phase, further streamlining traffic flow and integration with existing infrastructure.

This depot project underscores Gurgaon's ongoing efforts to bolster its metro network, addressing growing urban demands and fostering sustainable development through improved public transit options.
