Jharkhand Governor Calls for Sustainable Mining to Power India's Self-Reliance
In a significant address at the Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines) in Dhanbad, Jharkhand Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar outlined a visionary path for the nation's mining sector. Speaking at the inauguration of the two-day Industry–Institute Interaction–2026 conclave, Governor Gangwar placed a strong emphasis on adopting sustainable mining practices and fostering indigenous innovation.
Critical Minerals and Green Energy as National Pillars
The governor articulated that critical minerals, green energy solutions, and advanced smart mining technologies will be fundamental in shaping India's ambitious journey towards achieving Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India). He described the III–2026 event as a timely and crucial convergence of academia, industry leaders, and policymakers. This collaboration is deemed essential as the country navigates a pivotal phase concerning its resource security and the ongoing global energy transition.
Celebrating a Century of Mining Excellence
Governor Gangwar paid tribute to the host institution, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, which is currently commemorating 100 years of excellence in mining, geology, and energy education. He highlighted the institute's pivotal and enduring role in fueling India's industrial growth and development over the past century. The governor's remarks underscored the deep historical connection between the institution and the nation's economic progress.
Jharkhand's Central Role and the Imperative of Responsibility
Turning his focus to the state of Jharkhand, Governor Gangwar pointed to its vast and strategic mineral reserves, including coal, iron ore, and bauxite. He asserted that the state remains absolutely central to strengthening the nation's infrastructure and energy backbone. However, he delivered a clear and firm message: the extraction of these resources must be conducted with the highest standards of environmental responsibility and must ensure social inclusivity for local communities.
