Goa's Fishing Industry Faces Financial Strain Amid Soaring Diesel Costs
In the coastal state of Goa, owners of mechanised fishing boats are grappling with a sharp increase in diesel prices, yet many continue to operate their vessels as they await government intervention to alleviate the financial burden. According to the All Goa Purse-Seiners Boat Owners Association, diesel is currently available but at steep rates of Rs 112 per litre, a significant jump from the previous price of Rs 89 per litre.
Association Raises Concerns Over Unsustainable Operations
Harshad Dhond, president of the association, highlighted the dire situation, stating, "We have ample fuel, but at this price, it is not financially possible in the long run." The association has already escalated the issue to relevant authorities, submitting a representation through the directorate of fisheries and the department of civil supplies. However, members report that there has been no proper response from the government so far, leaving them in a state of uncertainty.
Mixed Responses from Boat Operators
While some vessels have temporarily halted operations—with approximately 15 to 20 boats anchored at jetties—many operators have persisted with fishing activities to sustain their livelihoods. Boat owners have not yet reached a collective decision to suspend operations and are closely monitoring the situation. Dhond added that although fish prices remain stable currently, the lack of timely government support and price stabilisation measures could lead to more vessels remaining docked.
