Tragic Electrocution Incident Claims Five Lives at Dinhata Stone Factory

A horrific industrial accident unfolded on Sunday evening at a stone factory located near the Sahebganj cold storage in Dinhata, resulting in the tragic deaths of five labourers due to electrocution. Another individual sustained severe injuries and is currently undergoing emergency medical treatment at Dinhata Hospital, with his condition reported as critical.

Details of the Fatal Accident

The catastrophic incident occurred while a group of labourers was engaged in the task of moving a heavy mixture machine within the factory premises. This factory, which commenced operations only a few months ago, is situated in close proximity to the Balarampur Road cold storage area. During the process of pulling the machine, the lift apparatus made inadvertent contact with a high-voltage overhead electric wire, leading to an immediate and deadly electrical discharge.

The impact of the electrocution was instantaneous and fatal for four of the workers, who tragically lost their lives on the spot. A fifth labourer suffered grievous injuries and was rushed to Dinhata Hospital in a critical state, but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries shortly after admission, bringing the total death toll to five.

Victims Identified and Factory Operations

The deceased have been identified as Mukul Burman, Raju Sen, Sanjay Burman, Mithun Pal, and Suman. Additionally, Deepak Sen was transported to the hospital in critical condition and passed away soon after. All the victims were residents of various localities within the Dinhata region, highlighting the local impact of this tragedy.

At the time of the accident, the factory was in the process of expanding its infrastructure. An office room had already been constructed on-site, and casting work for an additional room was scheduled to commence on Monday. The mixture machine involved in the incident was being positioned and set up specifically for this upcoming construction activity when the fatal contact with the overhead wire occurred.

Emergency Response and Investigation

Local law enforcement authorities swiftly responded to the scene upon receiving distress calls and reports of the accident. Police personnel rushed to the factory location to secure the area and initiate preliminary investigations. The bodies of the deceased were carefully recovered and transported one by one to Dinhata Hospital for post-mortem examinations and formal identification procedures.

This tragic event underscores significant safety concerns regarding industrial operations and electrical hazard management in workplace environments. The community of Dinhata is in mourning as investigations continue to determine the exact circumstances and potential lapses that led to this preventable loss of life.
