Indian Railways is on the cusp of a major upgrade with the imminent launch of its first Vande Bharat Sleeper train, set to revolutionize overnight travel on the Howrah-Guwahati-Howrah route. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw inspected the new rake in New Delhi on Saturday, announcing that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off the service within the next 18 days.
First Glimpse: Design, Speed, and Safety Features
The much-anticipated train, sporting a distinctive orange-and-grey livery, promises a significant leap in passenger comfort and safety. The train has a design speed of 180 kmph, positioning it as a semi-high-speed option for the long route. A critical safety feature is the integration of Kavach, India's indigenous Automatic Train Protection System, designed to prevent collisions.
For enhanced security, all 16 coaches are fitted with CCTV cameras. The train also boasts an aerodynamic exterior and features automatic exterior passenger doors. Inside, passengers will find ergonomically designed berths with improved cushioning and an emergency talk-back unit for direct communication with the Train Manager or Loco Pilot if needed.
Coach Configuration and Revealed Fare Structure
The Howrah-Guwahati Vande Bharat Sleeper will have a total capacity of approximately 823 passengers. The rake composition includes 11 AC three-tier coaches, 4 AC two-tier coaches, and 1 first-class AC coach.
Indian Railways has also disclosed the inaugural fare structure, which includes meals. The journey from Howrah to Guwahati in:
- AC Three-Tier will cost Rs 2,300 per passenger.
- AC Two-Tier will be priced at Rs 3,000 per passenger.
- First AC will have a fare of Rs 3,600 per passenger.
Culinary Experience and Travel Transformation
In a move to enhance the passenger experience, the service will feature region-specific culinary offerings during the journey. This initiative aims to provide a taste of local flavors, adding a unique cultural dimension to the travel experience on this key corridor connecting West Bengal and Assam.
The introduction of the Vande Bharat Sleeper variant is expected to further transform rail travel along this busy route, offering a faster, safer, and more comfortable alternative to existing overnight services. The inspection by Minister Vaishnaw marks the final stages of preparation before the train's historic maiden run, eagerly awaited by passengers across Eastern India.
