Massive Fire Destroys Over 300 Sandalwood Trees in Chintamani Farm, Farmer Alleges Foul Play
A devastating fire has caused extensive damage to a farm in Chintamani taluk, Chikkaballapura district, destroying more than 300 valuable sandalwood trees and approximately 800 bamboo plants. The incident occurred on a 1.35-acre plot at Chowdadenahalli village, belonging to progressive farmer Ramesh, who has raised suspicions of foul play behind the blaze.
Details of the Fire and Damage
The fire completely gutted the plantation, which originally consisted of around 500 sandalwood trees and 1,000 bamboo plants spread across nearly two acres. The sandalwood trees were about six years old and had been carefully nurtured over this period. In addition to the trees, the fencing made of American aloe was also destroyed in the intense blaze.
Ramesh has estimated the financial losses at over Rs 75 lakh, highlighting the significant investment and effort put into developing the plantation over the past six years. The destruction represents a major setback for the farmer, who had been cultivating these high-value trees with considerable care.
Police Investigation Initiated
Following Ramesh's complaint filed on April 4, the Chintamani Rural police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) and launched a formal investigation into the incident. The farmer's allegations of foul play have prompted authorities to examine the circumstances surrounding the fire more closely.
The police are now working to determine the cause of the fire and whether any malicious intent was involved in the destruction of the valuable plantation. The investigation is ongoing as authorities gather evidence and interview potential witnesses in the area.
Impact on Local Agriculture
This incident highlights the vulnerabilities faced by farmers cultivating high-value crops like sandalwood, which require years of investment before yielding returns. The destruction of such a substantial plantation not only affects the individual farmer but also has implications for local agricultural practices and economic activities in the region.
Sandalwood trees are particularly valuable due to their aromatic wood, which is used in various industries including perfumery, medicine, and religious ceremonies. The loss of over 300 mature trees represents a significant depletion of this valuable resource in the area.
The community in Chowdadenahalli village and surrounding areas has expressed concern over the incident, with many calling for increased security measures to protect agricultural properties from such devastating events. As the investigation continues, farmers in the region are hoping for swift action to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
