Diesel Vehicle Registrations Experience Sharp Decline in Chandigarh

Official registration data from Chandigarh reveals a substantial downturn in diesel vehicle registrations during the first quarter of 2026, with petrol-powered vehicles continuing to dominate the market. Records from the Registration and Licensing Authority (RLA) indicate a clear shift in consumer preferences toward alternative fuel options.

Registration Numbers Tell a Clear Story

Between January and March 2026, only 1,386 diesel vehicles were registered out of a total of 12,581 new vehicle registrations in Chandigarh. Monthly diesel registrations consistently remained below the 500-vehicle threshold throughout this period. In contrast, petrol vehicle registrations demonstrated strong performance with 3,329 registrations in January, 2,846 in February, and 3,164 in March, covering both light motor vehicles and two-wheelers.

Alternative Fuel Vehicles Show Consistent Growth

Other vehicle categories including electric vehicles (EVs), petrol hybrids, strong hybrids, and petrol CNG vehicles have exhibited steady growth patterns. While hybrid and petrol CNG categories currently show lower registration numbers compared to EVs, these segments have maintained consistent demand according to RLA sources. Authorities report frequent inquiries regarding registration procedures and available financial incentives for these alternative fuel vehicles.

Quarterly Revenue Generation Remains Strong

The Registration and Licensing Authority recorded substantial revenue from vehicle registrations during the first quarter of 2026. January collections reached Rs 32.5 crore, followed by Rs 24.4 crore in February. March proved to be the most lucrative month with revenue touching Rs 35.6 crore, demonstrating the continued economic activity in the vehicle registration sector despite shifting fuel preferences.

Multiple Factors Driving the Shift Away from Diesel

A senior UT official attributed the decline in diesel vehicle registrations to several key factors, including restrictions on diesel vehicles older than 10 years in the National Capital Region (NCR). "Many buyers now opt for petrol, hybrid or CNG vehicles for this reason," the official explained. The official further noted that electric vehicles are increasingly preferred for city and Tricity use, partly due to lower running costs and specific exemptions such as the waiver of road tax on electric vehicles in Chandigarh.
