Kolkata: Coal India Limited (CIL) has moved to alleviate concerns regarding potential coal shortages despite a notable increase in daily consumption by thermal power plants. The company has confirmed that 168 million tonnes (MT) of coal is currently available within the system to meet the heightened demand during the peak summer season.
Current Stock Levels
As of May 23, coal stocks at domestic coal-based power plants stood at 47.6 MT. Meanwhile, CIL's mine-head inventory reached 113.5 MT on May 24, marking a 10 per cent year-on-year increase. The company stated that this level of stock is adequate to cover 19 days of consumption.
Seasonal Trends Explained
CIL emphasized that lower stock levels during the summer months are a seasonal phenomenon and do not signal any supply-side crisis. The company reassured stakeholders that the current inventory is sufficient to manage the increased demand without disruptions.
This announcement comes amid rising concerns over coal availability as power generation ramps up to meet summer electricity needs. The company's clarification aims to provide confidence to the power sector and the public regarding the stability of coal supplies.
