KSPCB Chairperson Confirms Violations
Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) chairperson P M Narendra Swamy has acknowledged receiving multiple complaints regarding cement factories in Kalaburagi district violating environmental norms. The pollution from these units is severely affecting nearby villages, leading to health issues among residents.
Impact on Villages
Residents in villages surrounding the cement plants report constant dust and smoke, which has led to respiratory problems and contamination of water sources. A polluted stream in the area has turned into a health hazard, as documented by local photographers.
According to a report by Vittal Shastri, the violations include improper waste disposal and emission of harmful gases beyond permissible limits. The KSPCB is yet to release official data on the number of complaints received, but Swamy stated that action is being taken.
Government Response
Swamy said, "We have received complaints about cement factories violating norms, and we are investigating them." He added that the board will issue notices to non-compliant units and may impose fines or order temporary shutdowns if necessary.
The district administration has also been alerted, and a joint inspection is planned. Local activists have demanded stricter enforcement and compensation for affected families.
Health and Environmental Concerns
Doctors in Kalaburagi have reported an increase in asthma and skin allergies among villagers near the cement plants. The pollution also affects agriculture, reducing crop yields. The KSPCB has mandated the installation of pollution control equipment, but compliance remains low.
The issue highlights the conflict between industrial development and environmental protection in Karnataka. The state government has promised to address the matter urgently.
