Bengaluru's overburdened railway network is set for a major transformation with the Indian Railways planning a ₹6,000-crore elevated mega coaching terminal at Yelahanka, envisioned as the first of its kind in the country. A senior South Western Railway (SWR) official confirmed that the final location survey for the project has been sanctioned and a study is currently underway. 'Once the detailed project report (DPR) gets approval from the railway board, construction work will start,' the official said.
Phase-Wise Development
According to railway officials, the first phase will include 16 platform lines—eight at ground level and eight on the first floor—along with four shunting lines, eight stabling lines, six pit lines for maintenance, and two sick lines. 'In phase two, 10 stabling lines, four shunting lines, eight pit lines, and three sick lines will be developed,' the official added. The project is being designed as a long-term solution to the city's growing railway traffic burden.
Government Review
On Saturday, Minister of State for Railways V Somanna reviewed various railway projects in Bengaluru and underlined the urgent need for additional infrastructure. He noted that nearly 300 train operations are handled daily across the city's railway stations, with KSR Bengaluru alone managing around 150 trains every day. Calling the Yelahanka terminal a 'futuristic project,' Somanna said it will significantly strengthen the city's railway network in the coming years.
