From Financial Struggle to Beekeeping Success: Agra Woman's Entrepreneurial Journey
In an inspiring tale of resilience and determination, a woman from a rural village in Agra has transformed her life through entrepreneurship, building a flourishing beekeeping venture that now generates substantial annual revenue.
Overcoming Adversity Through Enterprise
Rajendri Singh, 38, a resident of Tasaud village in Pinahat block with only a Class 10 education, has demonstrated remarkable entrepreneurial spirit. Married at 23 to a farmer who was the sole breadwinner for their family of four, she faced significant financial challenges that intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic.
"During Covid-19, financial constraints increased dramatically," Rajendri told TOI. "The loans my husband had taken became a serious challenge, prompting me to start this business with my family's crucial support."
Strategic Beginnings with Government Support
Her journey began when she joined the Uttar Pradesh State Rural Livelihood Mission (UPSRLM) as a banking correspondent (BC) Sakhi. She subsequently formed the ‘Shri Banke Bihari Self-Help Group' with 12 other women, creating a foundation for collective economic empowerment.
Rajendri launched her beekeeping enterprise in 2020 with initial financial assistance comprising:
- Rs 30,000 from the Community Investment Fund
- A Rs 50,000 bank credit limit
- Rs 85,000 under the Mudra loan scheme
She has also benefited from the government's Lakhpati Didi scheme, which aims to empower women entrepreneurs in rural areas.
Remarkable Growth and Expansion
Within just one year, Rajendri's annual income soared to approximately Rs 6 lakh. Encouraged by this rapid growth, she formally registered her business as ‘GS Madhumakhi Palan Company' in 2025 and secured a substantial Rs 25 lakh loan to expand operations.
Today, her enterprise boasts over 400 bee boxes and her brand ‘Kaushik Honey' supplies products across multiple regions including Agra, Mathura, Delhi, and parts of Rajasthan such as Alwar and Bikaner. The business operates through both business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-consumer (B2C) models, ensuring broad market reach.
Comprehensive Business Operations
The self-help group now manages complete processing, packaging, and branding operations, significantly enhancing profitability. "Joining the self-help group fundamentally changed my life," Rajendri emphasized. "With government support and relentless hard work, I have achieved financial stability. Five people now work with me, and my husband supports the business by managing accounts and marketing."
Her venture has achieved an impressive annual turnover of Rs 25 lakh, representing extraordinary growth from modest beginnings.
Broader Impact on Rural Women's Empowerment
Officials report that more than 36,000 women in Agra district have attained ‘Lakhpati Didi' status, highlighting the significant impact of government schemes in strengthening rural economies and promoting women-led enterprises. Rajendri's story exemplifies how strategic support, community collaboration, and personal determination can create sustainable livelihoods and transform rural economic landscapes.
This success narrative underscores the potential of targeted entrepreneurship programs to unlock economic opportunities for women in India's rural heartlands, creating ripple effects that benefit entire communities.
