Mumbai: Mumbai's peak power demand touched 4,500 megawatts (MW) on Monday, as rising temperatures and humidity drove heavier use of fans and air-conditioners across the city. The surge reflects the increasing strain on the power network during the summer months.
Statewide Demand Crosses 31,000 MW
Across Maharashtra, the peak power demand crossed the 31,000 MW mark, underlining the growing pressure on the electricity grid. The state's power infrastructure has been operating near capacity as residents rely more on cooling appliances to combat the heat.
Record High Earlier This Month
Earlier in May, Mumbai recorded its highest-ever peak power demand of 4,540 MW on May 11. This new peak surpassed previous records, indicating a trend of rising electricity consumption during the pre-monsoon season.
The increased demand has prompted power distribution companies to ensure uninterrupted supply, though occasional outages have been reported in some areas. Officials attribute the spike to a combination of higher temperatures and increased humidity, which make conditions feel even hotter.
Residents are advised to use energy-efficient appliances and practice conservation measures to help manage the load on the power grid. The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has been monitoring the situation closely and coordinating with generation plants to meet the demand.
