Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Tuesday stated that India is fully prepared for the upcoming kharif season, with sufficient seed stocks to mitigate any potential impact of the El Nino weather phenomenon on agricultural production. Addressing a press conference, Chouhan emphasized that the government has taken proactive measures to ensure the availability of quality seeds and other inputs for farmers across the country.
Government's Preparedness for Kharif Season
Chouhan highlighted that the Ministry of Agriculture has conducted a thorough assessment of seed requirements for the kharif season, which typically begins with the onset of the southwest monsoon in June. He assured that the country has adequate stocks of seeds for all major crops, including paddy, maize, pulses, and oilseeds. The minister also noted that the government is closely monitoring the weather situation and has put in place contingency plans to address any adverse effects of El Nino.
El Nino Impact and Mitigation Measures
El Nino, a climate pattern characterized by warming of sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean, often leads to erratic monsoon rainfall in India. This can affect crop sowing and yields. Chouhan stated that the government has prepared a comprehensive strategy to deal with any potential shortfall in rainfall. He urged farmers to follow the advisories issued by the Indian Meteorological Department and agricultural universities to minimize risks.
Seed Stocks and Distribution
The minister provided details on the seed stock position, stating that the country has over 100 lakh quintals of certified seeds for various kharif crops. He added that the distribution network has been strengthened to ensure timely availability of seeds at the village level. Chouhan also mentioned that the government has set up a central control room to monitor the supply of seeds and other inputs across states.
Support for Farmers
In addition to seed stocks, the government has ensured the availability of fertilizers and pesticides at reasonable prices. Chouhan said that the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) will provide coverage to farmers in case of crop loss due to adverse weather conditions. He also highlighted the role of Kisan Credit Cards in providing easy access to credit for purchasing inputs.
Chouhan concluded by expressing confidence that with the collective efforts of the central and state governments, farmers will be able to achieve a successful kharif season despite the potential challenges posed by El Nino.
