Goa Scorches at 47.2°C Heat Index, Monsoon Yet to Arrive

Panaji: Goa experienced intense summer heat on June 1, a time when the state typically witnesses the onset of the monsoon. However, the southwest monsoon has yet to arrive along Goa's coast, leaving residents and visitors sweltering under scorching conditions.

Recorded Temperatures and Humidity Levels

According to weather observations, Panaji recorded a maximum temperature of 35.6 degrees Celsius, which is 2.6 degrees above normal. The minimum temperature stood at 28.5 degrees Celsius, 2.8 degrees above normal. Relative humidity was recorded at 67 percent. However, high humidity levels pushed the heat index, or 'feels like' temperature, to a blistering 47.2 degrees Celsius, making outdoor conditions particularly uncomfortable.

Similarly, Mormugao recorded a maximum temperature of 35.4 degrees Celsius, 2.9 degrees above normal, while the minimum temperature was 28.8 degrees Celsius, 2.7 degrees above normal. Relative humidity in Mormugao was higher at 85 percent, exacerbating the discomfort.

Persistence of Hot and Humid Conditions

The hot and humid conditions are expected to persist until monsoon showers begin affecting Goa in the coming days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a three-day yellow alert for Goa, warning of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour across the state from June 3 to 5. However, no large change in temperatures is anticipated during this period.

According to the forecast, light to moderate rainfall or thundershowers are likely to occur at several places, and isolated locations may also experience thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds. Residents are advised to stay cautious and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during the alert period.
