Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), on Friday called for India to intensify its efforts to become self-reliant in critical resources and technologies. Speaking at the company's 48th Annual General Meeting (AGM), Ambani stressed the importance of reducing dependence on imports for key sectors such as energy, electronics, and telecommunications.
Energy Transition and Digital Infrastructure
Ambani highlighted that India must accelerate its energy transition journey by investing in renewable energy sources, green hydrogen, and battery storage technologies. He noted that Reliance has already committed $10 billion to build a green energy ecosystem in Gujarat. Additionally, he emphasized the need for robust digital infrastructure, including 5G and 6G networks, to support the country's digital economy.
Critical Minerals and Semiconductor Manufacturing
The RIL chairman pointed out that India should focus on securing critical minerals like lithium, cobalt, and rare earth elements, which are essential for electric vehicles and electronics. He also advocated for boosting domestic semiconductor manufacturing, calling it a strategic necessity for national security and economic growth. Reliance has already partnered with global firms to set up semiconductor facilities in India.
Policy Support and Industry Collaboration
Ambani urged the government to provide policy support, including production-linked incentives (PLI) and tax breaks, to encourage domestic production. He also called for stronger collaboration between industry, academia, and research institutions to foster innovation and reduce technology gaps. 'India has the talent and the market to become a global hub for critical technologies,' he said.
Reliance's Role in Self-Reliance
Ambani reiterated Reliance's commitment to the 'Make in India' initiative, stating that the company is investing heavily in new energy, new materials, and digital services. He announced that Reliance's telecom arm, Jio, will launch affordable 5G smartphones to bridge the digital divide. The company is also expanding its retail network to promote local products and support small businesses.
In conclusion, Ambani expressed confidence that India can achieve self-reliance in critical resources and technologies within the next decade if concerted efforts are made by all stakeholders. 'This is not just an economic imperative but a strategic one for India's future,' he added.
