Two Arrested for Theft of Power Cables Worth Rs 40 Lakh

In a significant breakthrough, Mutthiganj police, in coordination with the city surveillance team, arrested two individuals for the theft of high-value power cables and seized stolen material valued at lakhs of rupees from their possession.

Arrest and Recovery

The accused, identified as Mohammad Asif Malik, 25, of Shamli, and Saavi Khan, 19, of Baghpat, were apprehended on Thursday from the Parade Ground area under Daraganj police station limits. Acting on a tip-off, the police team caught the duo and recovered two drums of 33 kV electrical cable weighing approximately 13 tonnes, worth around Rs 35-40 lakh.

Following the recovery, an additional section under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita was invoked in the case. Legal proceedings are currently underway.

Background of the Case

The case was registered after contractor Abhishek Singh reported the theft of a drum of 33 kV cable placed near the old Yamuna bridge under Mutthiganj police station limits. The cable was intended for installation between Bairahana Power House and Gaughat Power House.

Accused's Confession

During interrogation, the accused revealed that they were employed with a private firm associated with the electricity department and stole the cable on the instructions of a contractor. They also confessed to stealing another drum from the Boat Club area under Kidganj police station. The stolen cables were to be sold, with the proceeds distributed among themselves.

Ongoing Investigation

Police stated that efforts are ongoing to identify other individuals involved in the racket and take appropriate action. Further arrests are expected as the investigation progresses.
