PM Modi Champions India as a Global Investment Powerhouse at Micron Facility Launch
In a significant address amid escalating geopolitical conflicts and trade tensions, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday vigorously promoted India as a premier destination for international investment. Speaking at the inauguration of US-based chip giant Micron Technology's ATMP (assembly, testing, marking, and packaging) plant in Sanand, Gujarat, Modi underscored the nation's preparedness, credibility, capability, and unwavering commitment to delivery.
India's Readiness and Reliability Emphasized
"India is capable, India is competitive, and India is committed. Today, India has only one message for investors worldwide: India is ready, India is reliable, and India will deliver," Modi declared. This facility marks the first of its kind in India, representing a major milestone in the country's technological advancement.
Highlighting Gujarat's appeal, Modi assured that the state would provide the lifestyle and social environment desired by international companies. "A small town like Sanand has suddenly found its place on the global map. We will create the lifestyle you desire, the social life you seek, and ensure you feel no lack of facilities while working here," he stated, addressing potential concerns about infrastructure and amenities.
Rapid Progress in Hardware Sector
Modi noted that after establishing itself as a software powerhouse, India is now firmly carving out its identity in the hardware sector. He reflected on how discussions about data and chips were once limited to small circles focused on IT services, but today, the landscape has transformed dramatically.
Praising the swift project approvals, Modi detailed the timeline: "The MoU was signed in June 2023, groundbreaking occurred in September 2023, machines were installed in the pilot facility by February 2024, and commercial production has now begun in February 2025. This speed is a testament to India's efficient approach from policy to production."
Strengthening Global Technology Value Chains
The commencement of commercial production at Micron's ATMP facility is poised to bolster India's role in the global technology value chain. According to a government release, the plant will manufacture SSD storage devices, as well as RAM-type DRAM and NAND products, with an investment of Rs 22,516 crore.
Modi linked this development to broader technological trends, stating, "This is the century of the AI revolution, and semiconductors are the bridge to this change. If oil regulated the last century, microchips will regulate this one. India is rapidly integrating into the global semiconductor value chain." He emphasized that the world seeks to secure supply chains for these technologies to ensure a better future for humanity.
Collaborative Efforts and Growing Demand
The Prime Minister highlighted the collaborative efforts between India and the United States, the two largest democracies, in making global supply chains for critical minerals more secure and reliable. He also pointed to India's burgeoning domestic market, with a large population becoming first-time users of gadgets, driving exponential growth in electronics production and exports over the past decade.
Modi concluded by reinforcing India's commitment to technology leadership, noting that the AI Summit showcased India's vision, and this year further proves its dedication to advancing in the semiconductor sector.
