NHAI to hand over NH-16 stretch to Andhra R&B after Rs 200 crore upgrades
NHAI transfers NH-16 stretch to R&B after Rs 200 crore upgrades

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has initiated steps to transfer the NH-16 stretch from Chinna Avutapalli to Kaza toll plaza to the roads and buildings (R&B) department of Andhra Pradesh. This move follows the completion of the Vijayawada West Bypass, which is now open for vehicular traffic. The bypass has altered traffic flow patterns and reduced the strategic necessity of this stretch under NH administration.

One-time improvement works worth Rs 200 crore

Before the formal transfer, NHAI authorities will undertake one-time improvement works estimated at Rs 200 crore. These works include laying two layers of bituminous (BT) surfacing to enhance road quality and durability. The improvements aim to ensure the road is in optimal condition for the state government to manage.

New foot overbridges and culvert construction

As part of the infrastructure upgrades, NHAI is likely to construct two new foot overbridges (FOBs). One FOB will be built at Ramavarappadu Ring Road, where Eluru Road converges with NH-16. Another FOB will be constructed at Mahanadu Junction near New Vijayawada Govt General Hospital (GGH). These bridges will allow pedestrians to cross the road safely at these busy traffic junctions. Additionally, NHAI has proposed the construction of a culvert over the Ryves canal near Gannavaram. This will improve connectivity and ensure smoother vehicular movement in the region.

Project timeline and tendering process

Vidyasagar, director of NHAI Vijayawada project implementation unit, said, "The onus to complete all state-requested works lies with the NHAI before the road is officially handed over to the R&B department. A detailed project report (DPR) for the proposed works is currently under preparation to finalize the scope of works to be executed as part of the one-time development programme." He added that tenders for the project are expected to be floated by the end of this month, and the contract will be awarded shortly thereafter, paving the way for the commencement of works.

This transfer marks a significant step in the reclassification of road responsibilities between the central and state governments, ensuring that local traffic needs are met efficiently. The improvements will benefit commuters in and around Vijayawada, reducing congestion and enhancing safety.
